Overview

The Mod Bed Planter functions as a full compost system, just add the Subpod Min to start vermi-composting.  A vermi-composting system relies on worms to break down your food waste.  Worms move through the perforations underground, aerating and carrying those nutrients into the surrounding soil, creating an optimal and fertile environment for plants to thrive.

The Mod Bed Planter can be purchased on it's own, for simple veggie or flower garden.  The lockable wheels make maneuvering easy! The planter material is a rot-resistant carbonized FSC certified cedar, with a corrosion-proof alloy frame. The Mod Bed has a replaceable liner that allows for drainage without allowing soil to escape.

Features & Benefits:

  • Light-weight & modular composter
  • Quick and easy assembly
  • Lockable wheels for easy maneuvering
  • Compatible with the Subpod Mini as a complete compost system
  • Durable alloy & carbonized timber construction
  • Smell-free and pest-proof composter
  • Built to last with a 3-year structural guarantee

Please note the Subpod Mini does not include worms. You’ll need 500 – 1000 compost worms. Composting worms can be purchased here, or from a variety of local hardware stores or online sources.

Taking Care of Your Worms

Worms are low maintenance and will be happy as long as they are fed, have enough moisture, and are kept between 40° - 80° F.

You don't need to feed your worms every day – just add scraps as you have them. Worms can survive up to 2 weeks without any new food. Worms reproduce inside the bin according to their space limitations. They will regulate their own population, so you never need to worry about overcrowding your Subpod Mini.

It is very important that the Subpod Mini is not overfed. Worms prefer to eat their food as it begins to decompose, but not if it has become slimy and smelly. You should not add more than 1" of new scraps at once time, and uneaten food should not exceed 2" deep.

What to Feed your Worms:

Most fruit and vegetable scraps, pulps from juicer
Cooked food
Tea leaves/bags and coffee grounds
Crushed/ground eggshells
Hair, vacuum cleaner dust, soiled paper, tissue, paper towels, shredded egg cartons
Shredded newspaper, cardboard, sawdust (untreated), wood ash
Lawn clippings in small quantities, weeds, clippings, prunings, dirt and leaves

What to Avoid or Limit:

Limit citrus and acidic fruit skin
Limit bread, pasta and other wheat based products
Avoid hard fruit pits
Limit spice foods, onions, garlic and leeks
Limit animal products such as meat, dairy, or fats
Avoid shiny paper
Do not feed rotten food to your worms

Subpod can also process spicy herbs and peppers, dairy foods and oils, but it’s best to introduce these types of substances slowly, in small pieces, in small amounts at first, and only after your worms are fully established (around three months).
