Tender Leaf Toys Wooden Garden Play Sets

Open the door on the Tender Leaf Toys Wooden Greenhouse & Raised Garden Bed Set and there is a whole growing season inside: two seed trays, a planting bench, four pot plants and three tomato shrubs, under a roof with two removable panels so a child can reach straight down into it. Outside the glass sit a cold frame, a raised bed holding nine vegetables, a compost bin, a lawnmower, a watering can, a topiary tree, a wheelbarrow and a deck chair. Seedlings start under cover, then move out to the cold frame or the bed, which is the order a gardener works in. The set plays on its own or slots in beside a doll house already in the house.

That set sets the tone for the page. The Tender Leaf Toys sold here are the garden-and-nature end of the brand, and what separates one set from the next is scale: a single flowerpot that comes apart in the hand at one end, a greenhouse with a cold frame and raised bed beside it at the other. Each one copies real garden equipment closely enough to be worth something outside the playroom. A child who has planted a wooden tomato shrub in a wooden raised bed has a head start on the real one.

Small sets, small hands

The Wooden Blossom Flowerpot Set is one flower taken apart: a solid wooden flowerpot holding a soil disc, a stem, leaves, petals, a butterfly and a pair of shears. The leaves and petals lift off, so it comes apart and goes back together, and the butterfly is there to explain what beneficial insects are doing in a garden in the first place.

The Wooden Garden Themed Building Blocks are the youngest set on the page and the only one with an age guide below three: 18 months and up. Twenty-four push-and-click blocks, all of them illustrated with a nature theme, so one pile of pieces covers stacking, hand-eye coordination and balance, then doubles as a sorting and matching game.

Thirteen garden bugs make up The Bug Hotel Wooden Matching Set — snail, butterfly, ladybird, moth, caterpillar, worm, spider, bumble bee, grasshopper, fly, stag beetle, dragonfly and scarab beetle — each illustrated on plywood with its name written on the back. The pieces live inside the hotel box, which is the difference between a set that keeps getting played with and one that scatters under the sofa.

Sets that need a garden

Wooden Botanical Press: paper sheets pressed flat by a metal screw at each corner. Fill the pages with whatever the yard gives up that week, tighten the screws, and the dried flowers that come out are ready for personalized cards, bookmarks, framed prints, decorated candles and jars, or suncatchers.

Wooden Garden Wheelbarrow Set: a solid wooden wheelbarrow carrying three seed packets and three flower pots holding a sunflower, a carrot and a tomato plant, with a watering can, a trowel and garden shears to tend them. This is the one for the child who already follows you around the beds.

The Little Wooden Garden Designer Set stays indoors. It is 67 solid wood pieces, among them 7 trees, 14 grass tiles, 4 rabbits, a two-part shed and a pond, laid out into one garden design after another, then packed back into the planner box.

What the play is worth

Apart from the building blocks at 18 months, every set on this page is guided at ages three and over. None of it switches on, and none of it has a single correct answer, so a greenhouse layout or a garden design can be pulled apart and replanted every afternoon without anyone running out of moves. The quieter gain is the Bug Hotel: thirteen named insects, handled often enough that the real spider in the watering can stops being a crisis.
