Kids Gardening Sets, Tools & Grow Kits

The Baby Garden Hod is a real harvest basket that happens to be eleven inches long. Modeled on the clam hods New England diggers carry, it is pine and birch around a food-grade vinyl-coated wire mesh — the same caging lobster traps are made of — so a kid can pick eight quarts of beans, hose the dirt off straight through the bottom, and deliver them to the kitchen in the same trip. That is the standard this page holds to: not garden-themed toys, but working equipment cut to child size.

Tools that do real work

The seeding template turns seed spacing into a color-matching game: press the template into the soil, drop seeds into the color-coded holes — the chart covers more than forty vegetables — and set the depth with the graduated dibber. Kids get it instantly, rows come out right, and the planting chart quietly teaches why. For hauling, the DIY: Child's Wheelbarrow Plans are a downloadable build-it-together project: cedar handles, stainless fasteners, a solid rubber wheel that cannot go flat, and scale drawings with step-by-step instructions a parent and child can work through together. And the Foraging Essentials Tool Kit extends the territory past the fence — a foraging knife with built-in brush and scale, two canvas bags, a mesh bag and a sugaring spile, for the family that hunts chanterelles together.

Seeds with a flair for drama

The grow kits each fit in a box the size of a mug, and every one is bred for spectacle. The Sunflower Seed Grow Kit is the sprinter — giant flowers fast, seeds and detailed instructions in the box, plus a roasting recipe for whatever the birds leave. The Giant Sequoia Tree Grow Kit is the marathon, packing growing medium, perlite and a mini-greenhouse for cold-stratifying the seeds of the world's most massive tree — then someone gets to explain to a six-year-old what three hundred feet means. The Bonsai Tree Grow Kit carries the same full kit and sprouts a Japanese maple destined for a lifetime of careful pruning, and Pollinator's Delight is seeds and growing tips for filling a corner of the yard with the wildflowers bees like best. The Egg Coloring with Seed Growing Kit runs the whole loop in one holiday: dye eggs with organic vegetable-extract powders, then plant grass seed in the coconut-husk pucks — the egg carton is the planter.

Practice gardens

The wooden garden play sets let the season run indoors. Their Wooden Greenhouse & Raised Garden Bed Set is a complete miniature operation — seed trays and a planting bench under a lift-panel roof, cold frame and vegetable bed outside the glass, compost bin and wheelbarrow standing by — so the workflow of a real garden gets rehearsed at toy scale. The Wooden Garden Wheelbarrow Set rolls three pots of sunflower, carrot and tomato to wherever the pretend beds are, watering can and shears included. The Wooden Blossom Flowerpot Set assembles one flower from soil disc to petals to visiting butterfly, the Little Wooden Garden Designer Set lays out sixty-seven pieces of trees, grass, rabbits and pond into endless backyard blueprints, The Bug Hotel Wooden Matching Set names thirteen garden insects and gives them a box to live in, and the Wooden Botanical Press flattens the summer's best flowers into card and bookmark material under its four corner screws.

The long game

Nothing here needs batteries, and most of it survives being left in the grass overnight. What it grows, besides vegetables, is the habit of noticing — and a gardener who started at hod size. The mess department is fully covered next door in Mud Kitchens & Water Tables, and the family-scale beds and greenhouses live in our Yard & Garden section when the trainee is ready to scale up.
