The Mega 700 Is a 185-Gallon Hot Composter That Runs All Year

The HOTBIN Mega 700 is a 24.7 cubic foot insulated box — 185 gallons — that you feed from the top and harvest from the base. Fed at least 40 lbs of kitchen and garden waste a week, it holds 104-140°F (40-60°C) all year round, hot enough to break down cooked food, small bones and weeds that cold heaps cannot handle. Usable compost comes out in 30 to 90 days. It ships flat-packed with a base, a lid thermometer, a heavy-duty ratchet strap, two base aeration pipes and an integrated charcoal filter, and as the largest bin in the range it is built for large gardens, allotments, schools and community composting projects.

Most households want something smaller, and the range steps down from there — same insulated shell, same 140°F rating, less capacity at each step. The HOTBIN Mega 450 holds 15.9 cubic feet (119 gallons), asks for more than 25 lbs of waste a week, and turns it into compost in as little as 90 days; it also arrives flat-packed, and school composting programs are one of the uses HOTBIN names for it. The HOTBIN 200 is the household size at 6.9 cubic feet (52 gallons) — three to five people, a small or mid-sized garden, at least 11 lbs of waste a week, compost in as little as 90 days. The slimline HOTBIN Mini 100 is the smallest in the range, made for urban gardens and tight outdoor corners: 3.5 cubic feet (26 gallons), one to three people, at least 5.5 lbs a week, compost in 30 to 90 days.

The Number That Should Decide Which One You Buy

Those weekly minimums are the specification that matters. A HOTBIN makes no heat of its own — the warmth comes from waste decomposing inside it, and the insulated shell exists to stop that warmth escaping. Feed a bin less than its stated minimum and it will not hold 104-140°F, which is the entire reason to buy an insulated composter. Weigh a normal week of kitchen scraps and garden clippings, then size to that number, not to the square footage of your garden.

Nothing to Turn, Nothing to Crank

No model here needs turning or tumbling, and the Mega 450 listing adds that it needs no accelerator either. You keep the lid closed, keep feeding it, and let temperature do the work. HOTBIN's guidance for the Mini 100 and the 200 is to balance wet food scraps with dry woody material — shredded paper, woodchip, pruning waste — so air keeps moving through the load. Set any of these bins on a flat, level surface; the Mega models can sit in sun or shade. Mature compost comes out through a removable hatch door on the Mini 100 and the 200, and from the base on the Megas. Each listing makes the same enclosed-and-hot promise: fewer odors and fewer pests.

Mini 100 and HOTBIN 200 ship with: two thermometers, a stirring rake, a Kick Start bottle, two cam straps, an integrated charcoal filter and a built-in leachate collection system.

Mega 450 and Mega 700 ship with: a base, a lid thermometer, a heavy-duty ratchet strap, two base aeration pipes and an integrated charcoal filter.

Every model is rated to reach 140°F, includes a thermometer so you can read the bin rather than guess at it, and carries a three-year manufacturer's warranty.

Liquid Fertilizer From the Two Smaller Bins

The Mini 100 and the HOTBIN 200 collect leachate — the nutrient-rich liquid that drains out of an active hot pile, commonly called compost tea. Drain it from the tap, dilute it 10:1 with water, and pour it around your plants. The Mega 450 and Mega 700 descriptions do not mention a drainage tap, so plan on compost alone from those.
