A garden window, or greenhouse window, replaces an existing window opening and projects outward from the wall, so a flat pane becomes a three-sided box taking light from three directions. Janco's kit pushes out 1' 4", which is enough depth for a tray of seedlings over the kitchen sink, a row of herbs, or houseplants that finally get proper light. It fits a house wall or a shed wall. Because the frame arrives cut and drilled, the work left on your end is the opening itself and the structure around it — plan the framing before the glass turns up, since the kit is only as sound as the wall holding it.
Sizes and glazing: small at 39 5/8" x 39 5/8" or large at 54 3/8" x 54", frame in white or bronze, glazed in insulated Low-E glass or 1/8" Lexan, with or without an interior glass shelf.
Those four choices are what separate one configuration from the next in the grid above, and they do not weigh the same. Size is the biggest lever, glazing is the next, and the interior shelf is the smallest of the three. Finish is not a lever at all — white and bronze are priced alike at every size and glazing — so pick the colour that suits your trim and spend the decision elsewhere. Greenhouse benches tend to fail in three predictable places. The top sags in the middle under wet trays, water sits where it should drain away, and the legs corrode at the floor line.
