GreenStalk Garden Planters: 30 or 42 Plants in Two Square Feet

A balcony or a narrow patio forces an honest choice with pots — a few plants, or no room left to walk. Growing upward is the way out. A GreenStalk tower stacks tiers of planting pockets into as little as two square feet of floor, and one reservoir at the top waters the whole thing.

Pocket depth decides what you can grow

The two planters look near-identical. The 5-tier is 19 inches wide and 55 tall with 30 planting pockets; the 7-tier measures 19 by 56 and has 42. Both hold a similar volume of mix: roughly 40 gallons in the 5-tier, 42 in the 7-tier.

Depth is the real difference, and it sets the crop list. The 5-tier's pockets run 10 inches deep, room enough for tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, squash, potatoes, broccoli and even watermelon. The 7-tier's are 7 inches, sized for lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, beets, carrots, radishes, strawberries and herbs. Anything that thrives in the shallow pockets grows in the deep ones too, so a first planter with 10-inch pockets keeps the most doors open. Both come in Evergreen, Stunning Stone, Tomato and Sage Green. The Basket Weave version is the same planter with a woven exterior, in Evergreen or Maple, in either tier count.

Watering happens once, at the top

Nobody waters pocket by pocket here. Fill the reservoir in the top tier and gravity carries it down the stack; depending on the planting and the season, that can mean topping it up as rarely as every couple of weeks. The Watering System (four colors) removes even that step, connecting a planter to a standard garden hose with a reservoir lid, a spout, seven clips, two 52-inch tubes, a pressure valve and the fittings. One kit plumbs one 5-tier or 7-tier planter; cut the tubing and several run off a single spigot on one timer, which you supply.

Bases, movers and supports

A tower faces the sun on one side only. The Ultimate Spinner Base rotates any planter or pot up to 15 inches across and 300 pounds so every side takes its turn, drains runoff through the base, and includes 12 inches of tubing for that water. It wants a firm, level surface — patios, decks and pavers, not gravel, dirt, grass or mulch. The Ultimate Spinner and Wheel Kit adds six wheels, three of them locking, snapped on without tools. Indoors, the Ultimate Indoor Mover and Plant Stand (five colors) rolls planters up to 16 inches and 300 pounds, with a drip drawer that catches 1.75 liters of runoff. Plant Supports come three to a set: 38-inch rings that snap together, one per tier, for tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans and peas.

Starting the season indoors

The Ultimate Seed Starting Kit fits six 6-cell containers into a tray — 36 seedling pockets, 2.5 inches wide, each with air-pruning slots. A bottom tray allows bottom watering, a handled carrier tray moves seedlings around, and a planting map for GreenStalk planters is included. Single trays ship with a mini-greenhouse dome; the four-tray set, 144 pockets, does not. The GreenStalk Garden Journal arrives as a PDF at purchase — planting maps, calendars, to-do lists and record pages to print fresh each season.

The planters, seed trays, bases, movers, supports and watering kits are all made in the USA. Planters and seed trays use thick, food-grade, UV-resistant plastic free of BPA, BPS and PVC; the spinner bases and the plant supports are UV-protected polypropylene reinforced with glass. Assembly is tool-free, and the planters carry a five-year manufacturer's warranty on color and functionality. Give the tower a light, well-draining potting mix and a hard, flat, level surface.
