Where the Heavy Steel Goes

Steel gauge runs backwards: the smaller the number, the thicker the metal. So the four bed corners in each kit, at 12-gauge, are considerably heavier stock than the 22-gauge panels they hold together. That is where the load lands. Eighteen inches of wet soil spends the whole season pushing outward, and a bed that is going to fail usually fails at a corner. The panels look after the long spans on their own: each is rolled with 1.5-inch structural ribs from USA-made 22-gauge steel, which the manufacturer rates at up to three times thicker than the steel in many competing planters. Galvanizing handles the rest — rain, snow, sprinkler overspray.

Eighteen Inches Deep, Whatever the Footprint
