Flawn Seed Kits, from Bee Lawns to Bird Feeders

Sixty-two thousand five hundred seeds in a pouch rated for 2,500 square feet — about 25 to the square foot, and the creeping thyme listing warns that seed this fine is hard to scatter evenly by hand. Most of what Flawn sells follows from that problem: the bee lawn, clover and thyme kits arrive as shakers with soil builders and a compost booster blended through the seed, giving it bulk enough to land where you aim it. Sizes run from a 2.5 lb sunflower bag to a four-pack seeding 10,000 sq ft of micro clover bee lawn, all badged made in the USA.

Four bee lawn blends, and what separates them

A bee lawn is still a lawn you walk on; it just flowers while you do. All four blends use clover to fix nitrogen and include self-heal, so the third ingredient separates them. The Bee Lawn Blend adds creeping thyme and is the non-GMO, deer-resistant default. Micro Bee Lawn Blend swaps in micro clover, so the lawn sits lower and reads like turf. Thick Bee Lawn Blend adds fine fescue for shade tolerance and density — the pick for thin or bare patches. Speedy Bee Lawn Blend uses crimson clover for quick germination and blooms the same season from a spring planting. All four run from 250 sq ft to a 10,000 sq ft four-pack; square footage sorts the grid. Mow short, rake, shake, keep it moist — and count on two to five times the seed on bare soil.

Creeping thyme and clover on their own

Creeping thyme is the slow one, and Flawn is blunt about it: sleep the first year, creep the second, leap the third. Germination runs three to four weeks; in year one only about half the seed comes up, at one to two inches. Full coverage arrives over six to twenty-four months; by year three plants are mature, a foot or two across, flowering in July and August. It wants ground that drains; if water still sits a day after rain, thyme will struggle. It comes as the Seed Kit, shaker and soil builders included, to 10,000 sq ft, or as the Seed Pouch: seed only, non-GMO Thymus serpyllum in compostable kraft, to 2,500. Both stand 2 to 4 inches, 4 to 6 with blooms.

Faster color comes from the Tri-Color Flowering Clover Seed Kit: equal parts medium red, crimson and Dutch white clover, no grass filler, USDA zones 4 to 10, reseeding itself.

Fescue for high-traffic yards, plus a carrier with no seed in it

RUFF & TUFF is the group's plain grass seed: creeping red, chewings, tall and hard fescue, for yards with dogs and kids on them. It germinates in one to two weeks and is described as needing less water and fertilizer than standard turf. Sizing is by weight: half a pound covers 250 sq ft, a 10 lb pail 5,000.

Lawn Seed Spreading Mix: locally sourced dry concentrated organic compost and grain by-products you blend with fine seed for even spread, decomposing into the soil. It holds no lawn seed of its own — a 12 oz jar covers 500 sq ft, a 15 lb pail 10,000.

Bird seed that plants as it feeds

None of the bird seed here contains wheat or filler grain. Black Oil Sunflower is the simplest, a single ingredient, thin-shelled and easy for small birds to crack, 2.5 to 12 lb. Cardinal & Finch Feast, the Backyard Birder's Blend and Songbird Symphony suit tube, hopper, tray and platform feeders, 3 lb bags up to 16 lb pails.

The three Premium Pollinator & Wild Bird mixes are the interesting ones: bird seed with flowering lawn seed stirred through, so what the birds knock down sprouts. The Flowering Meadow Blend goes for a meadow, the Speedy Clover Blend carries self-heal with crimson and Dutch white clover, the Thick Bee Lawn Blend adds fine fescue so grass thickens as it flowers. Move the feeder weekly, they advise, to widen the planted area — the reverse of a shaker kit, where you choose where the lawn goes.
