Frequently Asked Questions:

Will creeping thyme eventually outcompete the grass? Yes, but prep matters! For best results, mow the lawn very short, rake well to loosen the soil, then spread the seed so it can make contact with the soil. Creeping thyme works best in sparse or thinning lawn areas. If your grass is very thick and healthy, it may take several seasons to fully establish.

Do I need to remove the sod before planting creeping thyme?  Not necessarily! Creeping thyme can be spread over an existing lawn, but it needs good seed-to-soil contact. For best results, mow the grass very short, rake well to loosen the soil, then spread the seed.

Is the creeping thyme safe for chickens and dogs?  Yes! Creeping thyme is a non-toxic groundcover option for areas where kids, pets, and livestock may roam.

Application Guidelines:

  • Application Timing: Spring, late summer, or early fall
  • Application Method: Broadcast evenly over prepared soil or lawn
  • Site Prep: Mow to 0.5–1", remove clippings, and loosen soil
  • Watering: Keep soil moist for 1–2 weeks during germination
  • Maintenance: Maintain mowing height around 3" during first year
  • Weed Control: Avoid chemical weed killers during establishment

Important Note: Seeds are extremely small and may be difficult to spread evenly by hand. For best results, use a shaker or handheld spreader to prevent clumping and over-seeding.

Please note, Creeping Thyme is slow to establish. Germination typically occurs within 3–4 weeks, with full ground coverage and blooming developing over 6–24 months.
