Create a vertical garden with flowering vines right on your patio! Our raised planter with trellis combines our popular cedar planter boxes with the support of a 3-sided trellis for climbing plants. Perfect for clematis, jasmine and more, these trellises also make an attractive natural privacy screen.
Introducing our new raised garden planter with trellis - the latest addition to our popular line of cedar garden beds and planters - made in the USA from durable, naturally rot-resistant cedar.
These rectangular trellis planters work well along the perimeter of a patio or deck, or to separate two areas for privacy. The trellis structure and climbing plants provide an attractive focal point and backdrop, enhancing your outdoor space. Choose your planter length and width to suit your space and needs. Planter boxes that are 22" in height come with a standard 48" trellis. Planter boxes that are 28" in height come with a 42" trellis.
Sizes and Dimensions
Twenty-four size combinations. Choose each dimension independently:
- Width: 20 inches or 26 inches
- Length: 44, 60, 72, 84, 96 or 120 inches
- Box height: 22 inches or 28 inches
- Trellis height: 48 inches on the 22 inch box, 42 inches on the 28 inch box
- Board thickness: 1 inch
- Legs: 3 1/2 inches, lifting the base clear of your deck or patio
The raised base protects your deck or patio and lets you sweep underneath, and the box sits high enough to garden alongside from a seated position, without bending or kneeling.
Features & Benefits:
- Solid cedar construction: Unique tongue and groove assembly is strong and lightweight, superior to other wood trellises. Dadoed crosspieces fit together to form a tight grid, we have found stronger than traditional lattices.
- Privacy screen: Trellis creates a natural screen, combined with leafy vines, to provide privacy and enclose your outdoor space.
- Grow flowering vines: This sturdy trellis provides reliable support for heavy flowering vines, from delicate clematis to fragrant jasmine, which you can enjoy around outdoor seating areas.
- Elevated design & accessibility: The raised planter box and trellis brings plants to a comfortable working height, reducing excessive bending or kneeling, making gardening more comfortable.
- Made in the USA
Planters stand on 3 1/2-inch legs, so the bottom is lifted off the ground. This protects your deck or patio while making it easy to clean under the planter. As you can see in the photos, there is a bottom beam along the length of the planter, and no beam on either end, so there is a 5 1/2-inch space between the ground and planter on the ends.
The planter is high enough to reach without bending or kneeling from a seated position. The garden is easy to access while sitting positioned sideways next to the planter.
Durable Cedar
Planters and trellises are made from kiln-dried cedar. It is a fragrant wood with strong natural oils to protect against moisture and fungal decay. Cedar can be painted or stained, or left unfinished to gray naturally.
We offer Eco Wood Treatment as one option for a sealant. Eco Wood Treatment works by penetrating wood fibers to create a natural buffer against water and fungal decay. It increases wood's durability while creating an aged, silvery patina after just a few hours.
Set Up & Assembly
The cedar planter box with trellis can be set up on any hard surface that is flat and level, such as a patio, courtyard or balcony. For the planter portion, simply stack the boards and insert stainless steel corner pins. Then attach the trim and planter bottom with included screws. A power screwdriver is recommended. Detailed assembly instructions and all necessary hardware are included.
For the trellis portion, assembly involves arranging the vertical and horizontal trellis cross pieces on a flat surface, then gluing the notches and applying pressure to form a grid. Once the cross pieces are in place, the frame can be attached with included screws, again applying wood glue to the notches where the cross pieces join the frame. The final steps involve attaching the trellis panels to the planter box.
We recommend letting the boards sit in a garage, shed or covered area for 3-5 days to allow the boards to acclimatize to their new environment. This helps to prevent any cupping, warping, and gapping.
Adding a layer of gravel to the bottom of the planter isn't necessary, as the slatted bottom provides good drainage. Optionally, line with landscape fabric to prevent fine soil from washing out.
FAQ
Will this actually work as a privacy screen?
That is what the three-sided design is for. The trellis wraps the back and both ends of the planter, so once climbing vines fill in you get a green screen rather than a single flat panel. Placed along the perimeter of a patio or deck, or between two areas of a yard, it encloses the space without the permanence of a fence. Choose a longer planter, up to 120 inches, for a wider screen, or set two end to end.
Should I choose the 22 inch box or the 28 inch box?
The 22 inch box comes with the taller trellis panel, 48 inches, so choose it when the screen itself is the point. The 28 inch box comes with a 42 inch trellis but a deeper box and less bending, which makes it easier to plant and tend from a seated position. Both stand on the same 3 1/2 inch legs.
How tall is the whole planter with the trellis?
Both versions come out the same: the 22 inch box carries a 48 inch trellis and the 28 inch box a 42 inch one, so either way it is about 70 inches from the base of the box to the top of the trellis - roughly six feet of green screen.
What should I plant on the trellis?
Heavy flowering climbers are what it is built for - clematis for the flowers, jasmine for the scent around a seating area. The crosspieces are dadoed into a tight grid, stronger than traditional lattice, so mature vines with real weight are fine.
Will it damage my deck? Does it drain?
The slatted bottom drains freely, so a gravel layer is not needed, and the 3 1/2 inch legs lift the base clear of the surface - the planter protects your deck and you can sweep underneath it. To keep fine soil from washing out, line the bottom with landscape fabric.
Does it arrive assembled?
No - it is a flat-packed kit. The box builds up in one sitting on corner pins and screws, the trellis grid takes glue and a little patience, and then the two are joined. Plan for a power screwdriver; everything else, including instructions, comes in the box.
