How To Use:

Bucket Bokashi Systems:

Within your Bokashi bucket, add a layer of food scraps. Sprinkle in the Bokashi bran until the most recent layer is covered, and continue this process until your bin is full. Once filled, leave the system to ferment for 2 weeks and avoid exposing the system to air.

We recommend draining the liquid every 2-3 days, which can be used as a "compost tea" / "Bokashi tea" once diluted. We recommend diluting the liquid at a ratio of 100:1 (water:liquid) to make the acidity levels safe for plants. Even when diluted, avoid adding it to young and tender plants or their foliage. Instead, add diluted bokashi juice to the soil surrounding the plants. You can also use the Bokashi tea concentrate to clean your household drains.

After the food waste has fermented you can bury the contents of your bucket directly in the soil to finish off decomposing or you can add it to an existing compost pile or worm bed, or feed it to livestock! It should fully decompose in another 2 weeks or so, depending on conditions.

If you'd like a continuous system, we highly recommend investing in two buckets, so that as the first is closed off for a 1-2 week fermentation period, you can still add scraps to your second one. You'll know the Bokashi bran is working when you see white fungal growth.

Feeding your Bokashi Bin:

• Eggshells (crushed works best)
• Paper napkins, paper towels, tissues and plain paper (in limited quantities)
• Uncoated cardboard (in limited quantities)
• Coffee filters / tea bags
  
• Fruit and vegetable scraps, including citrus
• Dairy and cheese
• Bread
• Meats, fish and cooked food
• Faded flowers

Avoid:

• Thick cardboard or lots of dry paper: bokashi works best when the bin stays fairly moist, too much dry carbon material can slow fermentation
• Glossy or plastic-coated paper
• Napkins with cleaning chemicals, disinfectant, or lots of grease
• Large eggshell chunks
• Fluids (vinegar, juice, milk, oil or water)
• Pet waste
• Ashes
• Larger bones

Important Note: Bokashi composting is a fermentation process and requires regular application of Bokashi compost starter. Finished material should be buried in soil or added to a traditional compost pile for final decomposition. The pre-compost is very acidic so it is not recommended to bury directly beside vegetable gardens right out of the Bokashi bin.
