Sizes, Height and Planting Depths
Every cedar standing planter box is 34 inches tall overall, which puts the soil at a comfortable working height for most adults standing up.
- Width: 20 in or 26 in
- Length: 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 130 or 142 in
- Planting depth: 11 in or 16.5 in
- Overall height: 34 in on every size
- Board thickness: 1 in
An 11 inch depth is the popular choice and suits most vegetables, herbs and flowers. A 16.5 inch depth holds more soil and suits deep-rooted crops such as carrots, potatoes and tomatoes.
For scale, a 26 x 44 x 11 inch planter weighs about 69 lbs empty; the 26 x 120 inch sizes run 164 to 191 lbs empty.
Gardening at Waist Height
The whole point of a planter box on legs is that the garden comes up to you. At 34 inches, the soil sits at a comfortable height for most adults, so you tend it standing up: no kneeling, no crouching, no getting back up again.
That matters if you garden with a sore back, stiff knees or arthritis, and it matters if you simply want to pick herbs on the way past. It also lifts crops well clear of the ground, where they are harder for ground-level pests to reach.
Because it stands on legs rather than sitting on soil, it works where a garden bed cannot go: a balcony, a rooftop terrace, a paved courtyard, a deck, a driveway.
Durable Cedar
These planter boxes are made from kiln-dried cedar. It is a fragrant wood with an even texture and strong natural oils to protect against moisture and fungal decay.
To further increase the lifespan of your planters, you can apply a stain or sealant. We offer Eco Wood Treatment as one option. Eco Wood Treatment works by penetrating wood fibers to create a natural buffer against water and fungal decay. It increases wood's durability while creating an aged, silvery patina after just a few hours.
Set Up & Assembly
These Natural Cedar elevated planters can be set up on any hard surface that is flat and level, such as a patio, deck, courtyard, or driveway.
Simply stack the boards, insert the stainless steel corner pins, and attach trim, legs and bottom pieces using included screws. A power screwdriver is recommended. Assembly instructions are included.
We recommend letting the boards sit in a garage, shed or covered area for 3-5 days to allow the boards to acclimatize to their new environment. This helps to prevent any cupping, warping, and gapping.
Adding a layer of gravel to the bottom isn't necessary, as the slatted bottom provides good drainage. Optionally, line with landscape fabric to prevent fine soil from washing out.
We do not recommend placing these planters on sod or lawn - these surfaces are not solid or level enough to support the planter over time. For gardens that sit directly on the ground (e.g. dirt or lawns) please see our Natural Cedar Raised Garden Beds.
