Biochar Station: Make Biochar at Home

Biochar Station offers a portable stainless steel kiln for gardeners who want to make their own biochar. Biochar is a porous, carbon-rich soil conditioner that holds water, nutrients and beneficial microbes. Unlike most soil additives, it does not decompose quickly, which also keeps carbon locked in the soil.

The Stainless Steel Portable Biochar Kiln

The Stainless Steel Portable Biochar Kiln comes in two sizes: a 3-gallon kiln for small gardens and a 6-gallon kiln for larger gardens and nurseries. A burn produces up to 6 to 12 liters of biochar in as little as 20 minutes. The kiln burns cleanly with minimal smoke, and its stainless steel legs keep it stable. Heat-resistant gloves, a watering can and care instructions are included.

How to Use Your Biochar

Load larger pieces (1 to 2.5 inches across) at the bottom and smaller material on top, light the kiln, and put the chimney on once the fire catches. Mix the finished biochar into your compost so it takes up nutrients and microbes, then add the mix to your beds. Biochar can make up 10 to 20% of your topsoil. For a full guide, read Supercharge Your Soil With Biochar, and see our composting collection for bins and tumblers.
