Overview

Common Elderberry is a fast-growing, medium to large sized shrub that is usually found in moist soil. Elderberry causes quite the commotion in late summer when its big clusters of sweet, purple-black fruits attract every bird in the neighborhood! You can expect thrushes, waxwings, wood warblers, finches, mockingbirds & thrashers, chickadees & titmice, orioles, cardinals & grosbeaks, crows & jays, sparrows, nuthatches, vireos, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and wrens, just to name a few!

Elderberry prefers all-day sun, but will do fine with just a few hours of direct sun. Plant in multiples for heaviest fruiting—cross-pollination will allow each plant to bear more fruit. Little pruning is required, but if you happen to prune late in the season, don’t destroy the trimmings—native bees like to overwinter inside the pithy stems of Elderberry.

Elderflower syrup is a gourmet ingredient that can be made from the blooms, and is used to flavor cakes, cordials, and jellies. Once cooked, the berries are tasty in tarts, jellies, cakes, and muffins. Alternatively, use the berries to make an immune-supporting syrup, taking advantage of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Learn more about the benefits and uses in our guide, here
