Overview

The flowers of a Rose are pollinated primarily by bumblebees and other long-tongued bees. Many other insects and butterflies feed on the pollen and foliage while birds take advantage of the hips as well as other insects the Rose may attract. There are also many birds that like to make their nests in tall roses.

Native Prairie Rose: A vigorous climbing Rose native to the Eastern United States. This lovely Rose sends out long (12 to 15 feet) canes that can be trained to a fence, arbor, or large trellis. It can also be grown without a support, as a filler shrub. In midsummer, enjoy a captivating show of deep pink flowers that fade to near-white. This Rose will mature to be 6-12' tall, and 8-10' wide. Good for zones 5-8. Warblers, chickadees, wrens, indigo buntings, and vireos are some of the many songbirds that feed on the insects found in the foliage.

Native Smooth Wild Rose: A North-Eastern native, this spreading Rose has sweet pink flowers that have a light and lovely scent. This Rose is mostly thornless with some prickles concentrated at the base. This Rose will mature to be 3-6' tall, and 5-10' wide. Good for zones 4-8. This Rose benefits birds through the caterpillars it hosts. Over 100 species of moth and butterfly larvae feed on wild Roses like this one, and these insects are important food for birds.

Native Swamp Rose: An interesting outlier, this Rose prefers the edge of a pond or bog - the perfect choice if you have a wetland on your property. In early to mid-summer, enjoy soft pink flowers that give off a classic, soapy-sweet Rose smell. This Rose will mature to be 3-6' tall, and 3-6' wide. Good for zones 3-9. This Swamp Rose will bring in different birds with fruits to eat in fall, caterpillar meals, and twiggy habitats for nesting in. Native to the Eastern half of North America.

Features & Benefits:

  • Provides food and shelter for birds, bees and caterpillars
  • Audubon Native plants & trees are free of neonicotinoids
  • Grows in full sun to part shade
  • Grown & shipped from the USA
