Overview

A rocky, barren patch of land or an unmowable hillside comes alive when you plant New Jersey Tea! This tough native shrub endures drought and fixes its own nitrogen (it feeds itself!) with a strong taproot, so it can thrive where other plants fail. It gets the "tea" part of its name from its leaves, which have a wintergreen flavor and can be brewed into a refreshing, caffeine-free herbal tea.

The Jersey Tea shrub feeds bees and countless other pollinators when its cloudlike white blooms erupt in early summer. Hummingbirds feed on some of the smaller pollinating insects, adding valuable protein to their usual diet of nectar. The handsome foliage hosts around 40 species of caterpillars, too, which in turn nourish songbirds and their chicks.

Features & Benefits:

  • Provides food and shelter for pollinators and caterpillars
  • Leaves can be made into a tea
  • Strong, deep roots make it a good choice for erosion control on rocky slopes or other dry areas
  • Audubon Native plants & trees are free of neonicotinoids
  • Matures to 3-4' tall and 3-5' wide
  • Grows in full sun to part shade
  • Grows in zones 4-8
  • Grown & shipped from the USA

*Please note, unfortunately at this time we cannot ship into ID,MT,OR.

Care Instructions:

Watering: These shrubs will need to be watered daily for the first 3-5 weeks; then 2-3 times a week for the remainder of the year until winter. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

Soil/Conditions: Well-draining, dry-medium, average soil; rocky soils, sandy loams. Go easy on the fertilizer—this plant is happiest in lean soils.

Shipping & Delivery:

All Bower & Branch plants are fresh from the grower and shipped in specialized grower packaging. Plants are shipped on specific days depending on your location to reduce days in transit, and are delivered by UPS to your door.

These shrubs start shipping in March and continue through November. Unfortunately at this time we cannot ship into ID,MT,OR.
