Overview

If you plant an apple seed, you will almost always get a tree that produces small, sour apples—crabapples. For named varieties of both apples and crabapples, trees are propagated by “budding,” a type of grafting—not by seed. Choose a tried and true crabapple from our different named varieties below:

Chestnut: Blooming in early spring with white and pink blossoms, Chestnut is a vigorous annual apple producer that grows pale yellow crabapples with red blush and russeting. The uniquely chestnut flavored apples make a delicious apple cider, but can also be used in jellies or eaten fresh from the tree. This tree will mature to be 15-20' tall, and 10-20' wide. Expect ripe crabapples in early fall. Good for zones 3-8.

Dolgo: Blooming longer that most varieties, beautiful white flowers provide pollen for the bees in the spring. Dolgo produces crimson red fruits that appear in August and can be used in a wide assortment of baked goods, jams, jellies, and beverages. This tree will mature to be 30-40' tall, and 25-30' wide. Expect ripe crabapples in late summer. Good for zones 3-9.

Hewes: Blooming in the spring with white flowers, the Hewes is best known for its use in southern apple cider. Beloved by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, these bronze apples are deliciously sweet with an almost butterscotch taste. This tree will mature to be 10-15' tall, and 10-15' wide. Expect ripe crabapples in the fall. Good for zones 5-9.

Hyslop: Blooming in the spring with white flowers, the Hyslop is a tried and true producer of worthy Crabapples. Highly acidic and tannin-rich red and yellow fruits are great additions to hard ciders, as well as jellies, pickles, and sauces. This tree will mature to be 12-15' tall, and 12-15' wide. Expect ripe crabapples early fall. Good for zones 4-8.

Features & Benefits:

  • Crabapples are a great choice for brewing cider
  • Grows in full sun but tolerates light shade
  • Arrives bare root, roughly 48" tall and 18" wide
  • Grown & shipped from the USA

Care Instructions:

Watering: Crabapples will need to be watered daily for the first 3-5 weeks; then 2-3 times a week for the remainder of the year until winter. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

Soil/Conditions: All varieties prefer well-draining, acidic, loam soil.

Pruning Crabapples is fairly simple. We recommend pruning the branches when your Crabapple is done flowering, and cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear
