The VegTrug is very simple to assemble and includes detailed instructions. You can also watch a video of the VegTrug being built on this page. Once you have put it together, simply place the pre-formed liner into the VegTrug so that the top edge overlaps. Fold the liner back over the top edge of the VegTrug, and pull the drawstring to tighten the liner and hold it into place whilst filling the VegTrug with a suitable potting mix. Fill to within 1-2 inches of the top edge. Once the potting mix is in place, release the drawstring and tuck the liner down to be level with the potting mix. We recommend that you put the VegTrug in place before you fill it with potting mix, as it will become heavy.

The VegTrug is pre-treated with a safe water-based preservative. As a raw material, the wood will naturally contract and expand due to the humidity and weather conditions over time. It will fade in color when placed in direct sunlight, and should be treated on an annual basis. Ensure that you use a safe, non-toxic product such as Eco Wood Treatment.

Optional Accessories:

The VegTrug comes with one liner. Additional liners, greenhouse covers, and trellises are available below. These accessories are custom designed for the VegTrug:

  • From Penny at 8/26/12 5:21 PM
    • What potting soil/mix do you recommend for the vegtrug?
    • You can create your own soil mix by starting with your garden soil as a base. Then add peat to lighten and aerate the soil so plant roots can grow easily. In most growing regions, garden soil needs lime to balance the ph. You may want to add some compost or fertilizer to build up the nutrient level. Adding some powdered rock phosphate will also contribute to a healthy growing medium.

Another option is to buy garden soil mix for planters. You can also add some of this mix to your own soil. If you plan on growing from seed, it is advisable to use sterile potting mix in starter pots or trays, then transplant the young starters into your VegTrug planter.

  • From Fran at 9/4/13 4:30 PM
    • How does the water drain from the planter? Does it seep through the slats?

      Thank you,
    • Yes. Any excess water will drain through the slats so that soil conditions in the planter remain moist but not too wet.

  • From ROCKY at 4/5/14 8:48 AM
    • What type wood is this made from
    • VegTrug is made from plantation-grown Douglas Fir. All the wood is solid.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Irene at 4/7/17 7:58 AM
    • Does the wood contain formaldehyde? Does one need to treat the wood before assembling to prevent rotting? If I were to purchase this item it would remain on my balcony throughout N.E. winters. If covered, how many years can I count on?
    • The wood does not contain formaldehyde, and it can be treated but is not necessary. Although it has a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, if left covered it will last several winters.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Michelle at 1/13/18 6:48 PM
    • When you want to change out the soil, how easy is that? Do you shovel it out and is that difficult if you are short since this is off the ground?
      Thank you
    • It is fairly easy to remove the soil, as it is higher off the ground and you won't have to bend over. A small bucket would work well in shovelling out the snow.
