How To Use:

Bucket Bokashi Systems:

Within your Bokashi bucket, add a layer of food scraps. Sprinkle in the Bokashi bran until the most recent layer is covered, and continue this process until your bin is full. Once filled, leave the system to ferment for 2 weeks and avoid exposing the system to air.

We recommend draining the liquid every 2-3 days, which can be used as a "compost tea" / "Bokashi tea" once diluted. We recommend diluting the liquid at a ratio of 100:1 (water:liquid) to make the acidity levels safe for plants. Even when diluted, avoid adding it to young and tender plants or their foliage. Instead, add diluted bokashi juice to the soil surrounding the plants.

After the food waste has fermented you can bury the contents of your bucket directly in the soil to finish off decomposing or you can add it to an existing compost pile or worm bed, or feed it to livestock! It should fully decompose in another 2 weeks or so, depending on conditions.

You'll know the Bokashi bran is working when you see white fungal growth.

If you'd like a continuous system, we highly recommend investing in two buckets, so that as the first is closed off for a 1-2 week fermentation period, you can still add scraps to your second one.

Feeding your Bokashi Bin:

  • Eggshells (crushed works best)
  • Paper napkins, paper towels, tissues and plain paper (in limited quantities)
  • Uncoated cardboard (in limited quantities)
  • Coffee filters / tea bags
  • Fruit and vegetable scraps, including citrus
  • Dairy and cheese
  • Bread
  • Meats, fish and cooked food
  • Faded flowers

Avoid:

  • Thick cardboard or lots of dry paper: bokashi works best when the bin stays fairly moist, too much dry carbon material can slow fermentation
  • Glossy or plastic-coated paper
  • Napkins with cleaning chemicals, disinfectant, or lots of grease
  • Large eggshell chunks
  • Fluids (vinegar, juice, milk, oil or water)
  • Pet waste
  • Ashes
  • Larger bones

Important Note: The Bokashi process requires regular application of Bokashi Compost Starter. Fermented food waste should be buried in soil or added to a compost pile to complete the decomposition process. The pre-compost is very acidic so it is not recommended to bury directly beside vegetable gardens right out of the Bokashi bin.

I love this composting bucket. The insert with the rubber seal really allows you to compress the material into the bucket and expel the excess air out. I feel it creates a better anaerobic environment than the gray bucket. Plus, it looks nice and takes up less room than the other style.

I have one ready to add to the garden every week and lots of EM 1 liquid to water houseplants and my greenhouse with! This gets my kitchen scraps improving my soil in just 3 weeks where my compost pile took months to be ready to use. And when the outside leaves and grass pile up in my compost bin, the Bokashi makes the process go so much faster.

My Regenerative Ag approach to restoring soil health in my suburban yard just took a huge leap this winter when I saw this product while wondering what I could do come spring. I didn’t even have to wait that long❣️

I am on my second compost container. I buried the first one a few days ago and mixed it in with composted garden soil delivered by a local nursery and native clay/sand dirt to prepare for transplanting a Rocky Mountain juniper in a couple of weeks.

My goal is to add nutrients to many parts of my yard to enrich the New Mexico high desert native soil.

Your equipment is just what I needed to start the process in my kitchen. Instructions are fantastic and the bran mixture really keeps the odor away. Now I look forward to seeing the results in the garden and surrounding yard.

I haven’t diluted the liquid to fertilize plants as I need to calculate the proportions in the measure I am familiar with. My husband will help me there.

I must also say I am delighted to not be throwing food items in the garbage!!!

    Thank you.

The bokashi bucket was so easy to get started and within two days I had my first generous pour of bokashi liquid byproduct, which I’ve diluted for use with plants and also begun using on the bathroom sinks which have a tendency to get clogged. I’ve even gifted some to eager takers on the BuyNothing app! I have been cutting all my organics into half in or smaller pieces to conserve space and promote better pre-compost. I’m considering using some of my first crop of pre-compost to plant some seeds for my windowsill. The best part is that I can throw anything organic in there - including dairy, fish, stinky cheese, etc. - and it lets off no awful smell (just a little fermentation smell when it’s open to add compost), has no leaks, and attracts no bugs. The design of the bin is sleek and the size is big enough while also being manageable. I’m going through a bit more of the EM1 than I expected but it’s a cool project and my 5-year old finds it interesting too.

I have enjoyed the use of this method of composting for several years. I make my own Bokashi Bran with EM1 and Molasses. The new version is great since we moved to an apartment! I do have a garden plot ( larger than when we lived in Oregon) and so am enjoying not throwing our vegetable scrapes in the trash! The previous bucket was not “ kitchen friendly” so this update is great as it fits under our sink! My garden thanks Teraganix!
