Using Your Worm Factory

The Worm Factory 360 is simple to set up and operate. Managing your Worm Factory takes less than 15 minutes a week.

Start with just the bottom tray and bedding material included. Add 1 pound of composting worms and start filling the bottom tray with household waste. The worms will start processing the waste. Once the bottom tray is full add another tray. The worms migrate upward to the newest food source, leaving the bottom tray full of nutrient-rich compost.

As waste is broken down, moisture filters through the system, taking nutrients with it. With the Worm Factory 360, you can harvest this organic liquid fertilizer right from the spigot.

Your first tray will take about three months to be fully composted by the worms. After the first tray, you can harvest compost monthly.

You can use finished compost in your garden, raised beds, planters, or on houseplants. Worm compost adds vital nutrients to your garden soil, conditions the soil to hold water longer, and promotes healthy plant growth.

Mineral rock dust is included to adds nutrients to your finished compost. It has also been proven to be beneficial to the worm composting process.

Taking Care of Your Worms

Worms are low maintenance. They will be happy as long as they are fed, have enough moisture, and kept between 40° and 80° F. Worms should be protected from freezing, direct rain, and sun. Worms prefer the dark – they will burrow into the compost when exposed to light.

Adding food scraps to the Worm Factory is easy. Just open the lid and toss the food in! Add waste from fruits, vegetables, grains, paper, egg shells, coffee grounds, leaves and more. Avoid dairy, meat, and citrus items. Feed your worms about 50% food scraps and 50% fiber (e.g. paper or dry leaves). This creates an ideal environment for worms to convert waste into compost. The goal is to recycle what you usually throw away.

No need to feed your worms every day – just add scraps to your bin as you have them. Worms can survive up to 2 weeks without any new food. They can also eat up to half their weight in food every day! This means that if you begin with 1 pound of worms, they can get through a half pound of food every day.

As your worm population grows, they will process food at a faster rate. Worms reproduce inside the bin according to their space limitations. They will regulate their own population, so you never need to worry about overcrowding your bin.

    • How many worms do I get for $30?
    • You will get a pound of red wigglers which is about 800 - 1000 worms.

  • From Joe at 1/4/14 11:58 AM
    • I live in central Texas. Any ideas for keeping the factory cool in the summer?
    • Try locating the composter out of direct light, against a north-facing wall. Be sure there is adequate air circulation. You don't want the bedding temperatures to rise above 85°. Other ways to help keep your vermicomposter cool are:

~ Make sure composter remains moist.
~To increase airflow through the compost to cool it, you can place pieces of wood no more than ¼” thick between trays, separating them. This works best at night, and if you find that you need more air movement, you can add a fan. Just be careful that conditions don’t dry out.
~You can use ice in emergencies – place ice cubes in the upper tray and cover with a layer of newspaper. The ice will melt and filter down through the lower trays, cooling them. Only do this in an emergency and be careful of your compost getting too moist.

  • From JoB12 at 2/5/14 1:48 PM
    • Do worms not come with this purchase? Is that why it costs an additional $30 for the red wigglers? Or are the red wigglers just different worms that we can purchase instead of what is given to us with this purchase?

If it happens to make a bit more compost than a person currently needs, how can we store the extra compost?
    • The Worm Factory 360 Composter only comes with worms if you specify that option. (Some people prefer to get the composter but without the worms. They plan to get their worms locally, or already have worms from a second composter.) Yes, there is an additional cost of $30 for the worms.

You can store extra compost by putting it in a garbage can, with lid, or any other lidded container, plastic or metal. The compost will further break down and have the consistency of moist soil when you are ready to use it. The compost can be stored for months this way.

  • From Eddie at 3/17/14 11:50 AM
    • Will the worms reproduce over time? eg, would the composter begin to work faster? Will we have to worry about removing worms if the population grows too much?
    • Yes, worms will reproduce inside the unit according to their space limitations and the amount of food they are fed. The worms will regulate their population so you don't have to worry about overpopulation in your bin. Your worm population will double every three months if they have healthy conditions, allowing them to consume more food. If they are too hot, too cold, or don’t have enough food, they will slow down on reproduction until ideal conditions return.

  • From Kelly at 4/8/15 6:35 AM
    • I live in Canada and the winters are exceptionally cold. Worms would most certainly die if we left them outside in these temperatures. Can we maintain a wormery inside without fear of attracting bugs or emitting odour?
    • Yes. Worm composters can be discreet and low impact in indoor settings. A properly balanced compost should not smell bad. Typically, in cold regions these composters are brought into a garage which is warm enough to prevent freezing, or a pantry or mud room where it is out of the way but still protected from freezing.

  • From captkim at 4/16/15 6:58 AM
    • are the bins really clear on one side?
    • No, the picture is intended to show you the stages of composting, but the bins do not actually have clear panels. The bins are solid color plastic. Even if they were clear the worms would shy away from the light.
