Overview

Constructed from durable stainless steel, this portable biochar kiln is a high-quality investment designed to last. This kiln provides a reliable and effective way to produce biochar, a highly porous, carbon-rich product capable of absorbing and retaining water, nutrients, and beneficial microbes.

Biochar is a very porous form of carbon, that has been "charged" with nutrients and micro-organisms. These nutrients and beneficial microbes thrive in the pores of the charcoal, and slowly feed the soil when added to a garden. The slow-release of nutrients acts as a fertilizer, while the added porosity or the biochar increases the health of your soil and water retention to increase the yield of your plants.

When using the biochar kiln, add larger material to the bottom (1"-2.5" diameter) and smaller biomass at the top that will easily light and start the fire.

Features & Benefits:

  • Creating biochar at home helps turn waste into a valuable soil amendment
  • Stainless steel construction is built to last
  • Two sizes offer 3 & 6 gallon capacities
  • Produce up to 6-12 litres of biochar per burn
  • The kiln can produce biochar in as little as 20 minutes
  • Efficient design ensures a clean burn with minimal smoke
  • Stainless steel legs provide maximum stability
  • Includes heat-resistant gloves, hand saw, watering can, and care instructions

Small Kiln:

  • Weight: 13 lbs
  • Inner Chamber Dimensions: 15.5" tall x 7.5" diameter
  • Outside Dimensions: 15.5" tall x 9.3" diameter
  • Chimney height of 3.75"
  • Volume: 3.2 gallons / 12 liters
  • Perfect for small scale gardens

Medium Kiln:

  • Weight: 19 lbs
  • Inner Chamber Dimensions: 17.5" tall x 10" diameter
  • Outside Dimensions: 15.5" tall x 12" diameter
  • Chimney height of 3.75"
  • Volume: 6.3 gallons / 24 liters
  • Ideal for larger gardens and nurseries

Using Biochar:

Biochar can make up between 10-20% of your topsoil. You can apply this amount all at once or gradually over a few seasons. Once the biochar has been made in the kiln, we recommend mixing it into your composting system. That way, every time you add compost to your beds, "charged" biochar will be added as well.

Adding the biochar to your compost pile is a great way to increase microbial activity and fertility within the structure of the biochar, which is then transferred to your garden when you add the compost-biochar mix. Mix in biochar at least 3-4 weeks before using it in your garden.

Other Ways For Charging Biochar:

Once you've produced biochar in the kiln, it's ready to be "charged" or inoculated with nutrients and microorganisms. Uncharged biochar can absorb nutrients and microbes from the surrounding soil, stealing resources from plants.

There are several methods to charge or inoculate biochar:

  1. Direct Soil Addition: Adding biochar directly to the soil allows it to absorb nutrients, water, and microorganisms from the surrounding soil. This requires a waiting period of 3 to 6 months before planting to ensure the biochar is fully charged and won't compete for resources
  2. Adding Alongside Amendments: Biochar can be mixed with soil amendments and added to the soil simultaneously. We recommend to do this at least 6 weeks before planting to allow the biochar to fully integrate with the soil
  3. Soaking In Compost Tea: Compost tea can be used to charge biochar. In a large drum, add compost, worm castings, and soil from the planting area to introduce local microbiology and nutrients. The biochar should be soaked in this mixture for 10 to 12 days, with regular aeration for optimal results.
  4. Mixing With Compost: Our favorite way to charge biochar is to simply add it into your compost pile! We recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks before using your compost after adding in the biochar. This ensures that microbes and important nutrients have been absorbed into the structure of the biochar.
