Overview

Grown on a semi-dwarf rootstock, our sour cherry varieties are self-fertile, producing fruits when planted alone. However, harvests will be much more abundant when planted in pairs or with a compatible cherry variety. Read our step-by-step guide to growing cherry trees, here.

Balaton™ Sour Cherry: Blooming in early spring with white flowers, you can expect dark-red cherries late spring. Originating in Hungary, this variety is more resistant to cracking in excessive rain and the fruit is larger and more firm. The cherries are sweet enough to be eaten fresh, but tart enough to be an all-star in baking. This tree will mature to be 15-30' tall, and 15-30' wide. Good for zones 5-8.

Montmorency Sour Cherry: Blooming in the spring with white flowers, you can expect beautiful red cherries in the summer. Cultivated in France in the late 17th century, this variety continues to be the most popular sour cherry in the world, accounting for more than 95% if all sour cherry productionThis tree will mature to be 10-12' tall, and 10-12' wide. Good for zones 4-8.

Care Instructions:

Watering: These sour cherries will need to be watered daily for the first 3-5 weeks; then 2-3 times a week for the remainder of the year until winter. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

Soil/Conditions: All varieties prefer well-draining, moist, average soil.

For shape training and maintaining a great yield of fruit, prune regularly in early to mid spring. Once well trained, prune after the fruiting season.

Shipping & Delivery:

All Bower & Branch plants are fresh from the grower and shipped in specialized grower packaging. Plants are shipped on specific days depending on your location to reduce days in transit, and are delivered by UPS to your door.

These cherries start shipping in February through May. Shipping is not available year-round.
