Details

The Farmstead Raised Garden Beds are based on a 17th century design. Handcrafted of Vermont White Cedar, these raised beds will last for many years and weather to a soft silver grey. Our easy-to-assemble raised bed kits are perfect for growing vegetables and flowers.

Strong and functional

Lumber is custom sawed to a thickness of 1¼ inches for greater strength and longer life. With cedar slot and peg design these raised beds cannot pull apart, as may happen with beds that are nailed or screwed together. Pegs are made from black locust wood. Wood is not sanded or treated, so it has an unfinished rustic quality.

Stack them higher and save your back

Farmstead raised beds position the garden eight inches above ground level. They can be stacked two, three, or four high creating a working surface that is 16, 24, or 32 inches high. For a raised bed that is 16" high, just purchase two 8" high beds and stack them.

Q: When stacking the Farmstead raised garden beds, what holds them together?

A: The weight of the soil within the beds holds them in place on top of each other and it will keep them from shifting if on level ground. Although it is not necessary, it is easy to bracket the beds together with some inexpensive hardware or wood from a local store.

Tool-Free Assembly

Watch our video on the left! It takes less than five minutes to assemble these raised beds. No tools are required. Simply slip the end of one board through the slot of the other and secure with provided wooden pegs.

Raised beds can be placed directly on sod, lawn, or even a weedy patch. Once the bed is filled with soil, any weeds underneath will soon form a composted base. For best results, you may want to dig down a few inches to clear any large rocks.

No chemical wood preservatives

Unlike pressure-treated lumber, there are no harmful chemicals to leach into your soil. If you want to treat wood naturally, we recommend Eco Wood Treatment - a non-toxic, mineral-based formula safe for vegetable gardens.

    • I would like to not have to dig up some very old tough sod before building this raised bed garden. Is it okay to just lay down weed cloth and then build and add dirt?
    • You can set the bed on untilled sod if you prefer. But we recommend that you at least pierce the sod with a pitchfork to provide additional aeration and improve drainage. We do not recommend putting weed cloth beneath the bed since this will restrict soil access for the roots of your crops.
If you have a problems with moles, then an underlay of 1/2" galvanized mesh is advised.
We like to double-dig the soil beneath a bed since this clears and rocks or debris, aerates the soil, and lets you know the nature of the soil beneath. Also, the roots of your crops will send runners down to access trace minerals and available nutrients in the soil beneath the bed.

    • When is a good time of year to install these?
    • You can install the bed now if you want to plant a fall or overwinter crop. If you do not plan to garden until next spring, then you may as well wait until a month before planting to install the bed. The reason you install the bed a month before planting is to give the soil and its varied amendments (peat, lime, rock phosphate, compost ....) some time to mellow before planting.

    • I want to plant my raised bed on the grass in my backyard. I plan to grow tomatoes. Do I need to dig up the grass first or can I lay the boards right on the grass? What height do you recommend for tomatoes?
    • We recommend breaking up the sod with a spade to make it easier for your vegetable roots to access the soil beneath the bed. No need to pull the grass since the added soil will smother it.
Tomatoes are deep rooting, requiring a minimum of 12" of soil. You can have an 8" bed and still grow deep rooted vegetables assuming there is decent soil beneath the bed.

  • From Brenda at 2/22/14 3:35 PM
    • I have a bad back and cannot bend. I'm looking for something that will fit my garden. I currently have 3x6 and 12' . I would like something about the some size but not the same height. Will stacking 4 of these be a good height?
      Thanks!
    • Stacking 4 of the Farmstead Raised Garden Beds will give you a height of 32", which is very back-friendly for most gardening tasks. However, another consideration is whether you use a wheelbarrow. If so, it's convenient to have the beds the same height as the top of the wheelbarrow, which may be closer to 24", or three boards high.. Then there's no lifting, you just shift over things like bags of manure, half bales of peat and buckets of compost.
Either the 3 or the 4 board Farmstead beds would work for you. You can always start with 3 then add another row if you need it.
