Details

The Jora JK270 Composter lets you make perfect compost from your household waste quickly, easily and hygienically. It is a 'continuous-use' dual chamber composter, so you can add new material to one compartment while the other matures. With a capacity of 9.5 cubic feet, it can easily handle daily composting of kitchen scraps as well as any yard trimmings. It's the perfect size for a family of four.

Features & Benefits:

  • 'Continuous-use' dual chamber composter
  • Attractive design and high quality powder-coated steel construction
  • Holds 9.5 cubic feet or 70 gallons of compost
  • Operating Capacity: 63 pints or 34lbs per week
  • Freestanding setup with easy to spin side handles
  • Side vents provide aeration which speeds the composting process
  • Reduces or eliminates odors
  • Fully-enclosed and highly pest resistant
  • Rodent proof - elevated so rodents cannot access waste

Construction:

  • Exterior: powder-coated steel panels and galvanized steel legs (rust proof)
  • Insulation: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) a stable and absolutely non-toxic plastic
  • Includes stainless steel hardware

Rotating Compost:

  • Constructed for easy rotation - simply turn by hand after adding waste
  • Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste, so it processes efficiently
  • Adds air to the mixture, providing oxygen that is vital for the process

Insulation:

The composting process generates heat and different microorganisms work at different temperatures. The insulation in the JK270 composter allows the temperature to rise higher than 160F (70C) resulting in faster and more efficient processing of your organic waste. At these temperatures the process is so rapid that fresh waste starts to break down before it has a chance to rot and attract vermin and flies. With its superior insulation, the JK270 Composter will continue working through winter, long after other composters have stopped completely.

Dual Compartments:

The JK270 is divided into two compartments, so one side can be filled while the other side's compost matures. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost can be emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again. You can use the composter continuously, with no waiting between batches.

What can be composted?

  • Raw and cooked food scraps - vegetable, meat or fish
  • Cardboard containers e.g. egg trays
  • Lawn and garden waste
  • Light pet waste (e.g. rabbit or hamster bedding, not dog waste)

The JK270 composter will accept organic household waste or anything biodegradable. After adding waste, it will take about 6 to 8 weeks for each chamber to produce compost. Once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber every 3 to 4 weeks.

    • This is the dual-door version.

  • From Diane at 3/11/11 7:13 PM
    • Does the UV-Stabilized Polyethylene have phalates or BPA in it? Thanks
    • The Jora JK270 Composter uses high-density polyethylene as the insulation material. The HDPE does not contain pthalates or BPA.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Jody at 4/9/11 8:44 AM
    • How sturdy are the legs?
Will the legs resist corrosion sitting on the ground?
Are the legs heavy duty enough to take the bumping of a wheelbarrow?
      Can spare parts be ordered?
    • The legs of the Jora JK270 Composter are very sturdy. Steel-constructed, with integral cross-bracing, the legs will hold up to the bumping of a wheelbarrow, and they will withstand ground moisture.
We recommend the Jora composter be set on solid ground, or blocked up on cement pavers, and be level.
Spare parts can be ordered, but we do not keep these in stock. Special orders will take longer for us to deliver to you.

    • I see that you state it takes 6-8 weeks to create compost if you fill both chambers. Are you saying it takes that long for each chamber?
      Thanks,
      Al
    • Thanks for your question.

From the time you start using your Jora JK270 composter, it will take about 6 to 8 weeks to generate your first batch of compost. Once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber of compost every 3-4 weeks or so.

The JK270 is divided into two compartments. When you begin using your composter, place kitchen scraps in one compartment. When this compartment becomes full, allow it to mature into compost (about 6 to 8 weeks from starting time) and place fresh kitchen scraps in the second compartment. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost is emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again. You can use the composter continuously, with no waiting between batches.

  • From Barbara at 12/30/11 12:21 PM
    • Does it matter if the composter is located in the sun, part sun or shade?
    • The Jora JK270 Composter is designed to operate efficiently in all weather conditions, so you can locate it anywhere in your yard that is convenient. Placing the composter in direct sunlight can help speed the composting process by adding warmth, but it is not that significant a gain in winter since nighttime temperatures will cool it back down. In summer it doesn't matter, since average temperatures are sufficient for composting.
The most important consideration is convenience. You will be making daily trips to your composter, so locate it where it is easy to access. And since the Jora is a beautiful composter, there is no need to place it in a spot where it is not seen.

  • From Olivier at 2/5/12 10:15 AM
    • You provide the following dimensions: 44" L x 28" W x 52" H
I suspect 28'' is the width of the bin itself. What about the legs? What's the width of the JK270 measured at the feet? I want to know if it can fit along my side fence.
      Thank you,
      Olivier.
    • The dimensions of the Jora JK270 Composter - 9.5 Cubic Feet are as follows:

Side-to-side width of drum is 36"
Back-to-front size (diameter) of drum is 30"
      Base:
Side-to-side width of base at widest point (ground) is 45"

Overall height of composter, including handles is 52"

I will rewrite the dimensions on our product page to make it more clear.

  • From Ron at 2/22/12 6:48 PM
    • 1. I presume that the polyethylene surface on the inner walls of the chambers is a very hard surface? (Resistant to all life forms that may inhabit it)
      2. Is the Jora JK 270 designed to be kept under a roof or out in the open?
      3. Is there a location in N C where I might see one.
    • Hi Ron,

The inside walls of the Jora is not a very hard surface. It is a compressed foam insulation, about an inch or so thick. It does not tear easily like rigid foam insulation would but you could poke a stick into it pretty easily. It is firm and does not easily compress. I thought this inner surface was a liability when I first assembled the Jora. But I understand why they chose this material - air is captured in the foam cells which aids insulation while keeping the weight down. The inner surface is not tough but it seems to hold up under reasonable use.

I have two Joras, and have had one of them for 1 1/2 years. So far there has been no apparent damage to the inside walls. They are dirty, but otherwise OK. This composter is left outdoors in the open all year, through snow and freezing and hot sun. Still, if I had the space, I would set it under the eve of the garden shed or some other roof. But they are designed for permanent outdoor use standards.

This is about the 6th type of composter we have had for trials. I would say the Jora is the best one - made of steel, not plastic, has the two compartments for continuous use, and relatively easy to spin.

You would have to do a local Google search to find a local dealer. I would think there is one in your area. I assume you checked out the video on our product page. Also you can check Amazon, they usually have lots of product reviews.

      Greg

  • From Al at 4/10/13 3:46 AM

    • The Jora JK270 Composter does not leak. There is no smell associated with the composter during normal use.

  • From Kim at 5/27/13 10:06 AM
    • Do you only put kitchen scraps in it? Does it need anything else? Do you have to put in any dirt?
    • Composters commonly hold more than kitchen scraps. Many materials from the yard and garden are also compostable and these materials help balance the compost for faster and more complete composting. If you were to only add kitchen scraps, your compost would be wet and sluggish, with too much nitrogen and not enough carbon. You will want to add carbon elements, like dried leaves and grass clippings, shrub prunings and sawdust.
Here is page with all you need to know about composting, including a chart of what elements you can add and whether they are carbon or nitrogen-based.

Love it.

By Rosalind on 3/1/14

Rats do not stick around any more, they just plain can't get into the compost. It reduces the bulk of the composting materials quickly, so the capacity seems more than it sounds. I was concerned that it might be heavy to turn, but I am finding it no problem at all, it is very well balanced. (Female, age 66).

Excellent Construction & Service

By Lorie on 3/20/13

We moved from the country into town, and our neighborhood covenants will not allow an open compost bin. We are in the midwest and the intercontinental extreme heat and cold makes the plastic bins warp and freeze shut. An open bin won't decompose in the winter. I can't imagine living a life that includes throwing plant materials in the trash. I searched and searched until I found this construction.

It is expensive, but will outlast any other bin. I also want to share that we received incredible service from Earth Easy. There was a part that arrived bent and I contacted the company. With NO QUESTIONS ASKED and NO SHIPPING COSTS and NO SHIPPING HASSLE, I was quickly sent a replacement part.

It was easy to assemble, but it would be very difficult to do it with one person. You need very few tools.

The best parts are:
1. Metal Construction.
2. Dual Bin.
3. Sturdy.
4. Easy to Spin.

After having several emails with the company, I feel very confident with their service and believe you will be pleased.

Not sure yet

By Randy on 2/4/13

When we received the composter it arrived in 2 days. Upon opening the boxes we found that it was dented and bent on about 6 of the pieces. We worked with it and made it work because we didn't want to deal with the hassle of returning it. It looks nice and will probably work like it is supposed to. However, we have found that is leaks "juice" from the compost. We have not had this long enough to give a real opinion yet, but so far we are not very impressed..... one more thing. They show a video of a guy putting to composter together. The video kinda makes you think one person can easily put this together. You really need 2 people to put this together.

Jora JK270 Composter

By Mikie on 6/10/11

Got this unit before Christmas and finally got around to feeding it. Much easier to use than my old compost tumbler (which gave to my daughter) . So far so good. Been about 4 weeks since I started the process and it is just about done. Heats up really nice which was a hit and miss with the compost tumbler.

looks up to the task

By Vern on 11/23/10

Well it cost enough to get it here! But wow this is a serious unit. I don't know how the plastic composters hold up after years of sun exposure or winter freezes, so I got this steel one which looks like it'll last longer than me.
It looks real well made but I hope the legs hold up if I ram into them with a heavy wheelbarrow.
The handles for turning are a good feature cause where I live its freezing right now and you don't want to put your hands on the steel or they'll be stuck til spring.
I give it four stars for now. If it holds up a few years then give it five stars.
