Details

The Aerobin is large enough to accommodate not only kitchen scraps, but also all of your yard waste. Due to it’s insulated double-walled design, the internal temperature stays warmer than the outside air. Running vertically through the composter is an aeration tube which also speeds up the rate of decomposition. At the base of the Aerobin is a small compartment that captures compost tea, which can be drained from the small spigot. Finished compost is accessed by removing one of the two lower doors (one on each side).

    • Is it necessary to have insulated bin in Southern CA like Encinitas,CA?

      Thanks
    • No. You can compost using a single-wall plastic composter and the process will work fine for you. However, using an insulated bin like the Aerobin will speed up the composting process. The Aerobin also holds about twice the capacity of typical composters which hold 6 - 9 cubic feet.

    • Do we need to place the Aerobin in the sun? We are thinking of composting for the first time.
    • You do not need to place the Aerorbin in the sun. The main consideration in deciding where to place your composter is convenience, you'll be making many trips from the kitchen to the composter. Be sure to allow space for maneuvering a wheelbarrow since this what you'll likely use to remove the compost and move it to the garden.

  • From Patti at 5/15/12 5:08 AM
    • We recently purchased an Aerobin composter and have used compost from our previous composter as an activator however we were wondering; as water is usually necessary to compost, should we be putting some water into our aerobin?
    • In most circumstances there is no need to add water to your composter. There should be sufficient moisture in the materials you add to the composter. Some gardeners however, like to make 'compost tea' and add water to composters, with the water draining through to a catch bin.

This time of year it is not uncommon to have too much moisture in the composter which cools the composting materials and slows the process. If this occurs with your composterm here is an article which may help:

    • Do you have to add any activator? We will be composting mostly kitchen waste and some leaves. If so, what do you recommend?
    • You do not have to add an activator. However an activator will help initiate the composting process and thereby speed the process. Some gardeners use a bit of exisitng compost for this puirpose, i.e., when you empty your first load of compost, set some aside to add back into the composter to serve as an activator. We call this 'seeding' the composter. Even if all you have is good garden soil, this will help activate your compost.

  • From Anne at 4/5/11 4:12 PM
    • How long does it take for the Aerobin to produce compost?
    • I would say 6 - 10 weeks, depending on the temperature of your location (warmer temperature will speed the process) and the material you compost. If you have a balanced compost, (both carbon and nitrogen materials) the process will be faster.

  • From Leanne T. at 3/17/11 9:55 AM
    • Will this composter hold up to freezing temperatures. We live in northern Montana and our old plastic composter cracked over winter. Thanks.
    • Yes, the Aerobin has been used successfully in cold climates. In freezing temperatures, it is usually the lids of plastic composters which can get frozen and stuck. Tapping the lid from the side will usually work to unstick the lid. But users should not strike the frozen lid with a hammer or hard object, or a crack could occur.

block it up for spigot

By Maria Putman on 12/15/10

The compost tea spigot is too close to the ground for easy access. You need to put the composter on a solid base of wood or cement, 2"" above the ground in order to get a container under it.
Otherwise, this is a terrific composter - the best part being no need to turn the compost. We just pulled finished compost from the lower gate, even while adding fresh food scraps to the top. The wide open top is good cause everything you throw in goes in.

good, but takes some time for compost to finish

By Doug H. on 12/7/10

It has taken about 12 weeks, but the bottom section of the Aerobin composter has very usable finished compost which I'm starting the remove and set aside for use in early spring.
We are very satisfied with this composter, but have a couple suggestions. First, assemble the composter in the place where it will be used. It's big to move. Second, put it on pavers or something solid and check that it's level. Third, put a spigot on the tea valve and run a short hose maybe a foot or two so it's easy to pour off the tea. Getting tea directly from the valve was not easy. The blocking up on pavers helps.

looks good

By Joan on 11/30/10

We chose this composter because it stands next to the Dumpster behind the cafeteria, and it needed a solid base. We're building a composting program into the curriculum and getting a good response from the students. We had to place a large block beside this so the children can reach the lid to open it.
I wish you sold a corresponding compost pail. a large one, that we could keep in the cafeteria.
Today we are raking maple leaves to add to the compost. I think we have too much food scraps, it looks wet inside, so hopefully the dry leaves will balance the moisture. This is our first load and it's a learning experience.
I am pleased with this new composter so far, but I hope it can hold up to the heavy use it will get.

BIG and no need to turn anything...easy!

By Vic and Chris on 11/29/10

We chose this composter over the tumbler models because we have a pretty large yard and a 500 sq ft vegetable garden, and this can handle all the materials we have to compost.
The full width lid makes it easy to add plant skeletons from the garden and large clippings form the shrubs. Easy to dump in.
The volume is BIG. We don't need the second bin we used to use.
There is no turning the compost or spinning a drum. The tumbler composters are hard to rotate when they get full. With this composter there is no need to turn it.
I know you are supposed to turn compost but we don't. Never have. You open the bottom gate and shovel out the finished compost, that's all there is to it.
We don't use the compost 'tea' feature. But having a solid base keeps the mice out which was a problem with one of our old bins - the mice burrowed under the bottom edge and everytime I went to shovel out some compost the mice would run out.
You don't need activators and we don't pay attention to green versus brown stuff to put in - we just dump everything in the top and collect compost from the bottom.
Whoever designed this knew what they were doing. This is the best composter I've seen.
