Mosquitoes transmit diseases such as Equine Encephalitis, West Nile Virus and other diseases. When they bite an animal or bird infected with a disease, they go to lay eggs and come back to bite again. It is this second bite that transmits diseases. The trap uses a mosquito egg pheromone which mosquitoes use to mark special egg-laying places, but when they enter the trap to lay their eggs, they can’t escape and drown in the water. This prevents that second, and potentially diseased, bite. This non-toxic trap can be reused for years. Replacement Pheromone Lures can be found here. Past customers recommend these tips: • Traps placed early in the year will produce lower summer mosquito populations • Use at least 2 to 4 traps per average yard, and 4 to 16 traps per acre, depending on the closeness of swampy areas, mosquito intensity and temperatures • Replace Pheromone lure every 4 to 6 weeks, and use gloves when handling it • Rinse traps, but do not wash traps with soap as accumulated attractants will be washed away • use old or standing water from around your yard; mosquitos don’t like to lay eggs in purified tap water • Keep some of the water each time you empty it and you won’t have to replace the lure for at least a few empties • put the trap in the shade, in an area where there’s little or no breeze • you may need to wait a few weeks before the trap starts to function if you’re using purified tap water (after all, mosquitoes prefer swamp water) Ships to Canada and the continental USA.
