Features & Benefits
- Grow real food on any flat surface — patios, decks, rooftops, balconies, even paved courtyards. No tilling, no native soil needed.
- Untreated kiln-dried cedar — naturally rot-resistant oils protect against moisture and decay; safe for vegetables, herbs, and edibles.
- Stainless steel corner pin construction — superior strength to nailed or stapled joints, which is why we back it with a 5-year warranty.
- Slatted cedar base for drainage — no flooded roots, no pooling water, no separate liner needed (landscape fabric is optional).
- Raised 3.5" off the ground — protects your deck or patio surface and keeps the planter accessible without bending.
- Easy to assemble — stack boards, insert corner pins, drive screws (power screwdriver recommended). All hardware included.
- A wide range of size combinations — from compact widths for a balcony herb garden to long boxes for an apartment-rooftop kitchen garden. Custom sizes on request.
- Made in the USA — handcrafted by Naturalyards, a family-owned manufacturer. Backed by a 5-Year Limited Warranty.
These cedar garden planter boxes stand on 3 1/2-inch legs, so the bottom is lifted off the ground. This protects your deck or patio, while making it easy to clean under the planter. As you can see in the photos, there is a bottom beam along the length of the planter, and no beam on either end, so there is a 5 1/2-inch space between the ground and planter on the ends.
The planter is high enough to reach without bending or kneeling from a seated position. The garden is easy to access while sitting positioned sideways next to the planter.
Why Cedar — Durable, Untreated, Chemical-Free
Our cedar planter boxes are built from kiln-dried natural cedar — a fragrant, even-textured wood with strong natural oils that protect against moisture and fungal decay. Unlike pressure-treated lumber, cedar is chemical-free, which makes it the right material for growing food. And unlike pine or spruce, cedar can sit outside year after year without rotting, splitting, or breaking down into the soil.
Expect a planter box made from kiln-dried cedar to last for years outdoors with minimal upkeep. To extend its life, you can apply a stain or natural sealant. We carry Eco Wood Treatment, an eco-friendly one-time-only application that penetrates wood fibers, creates a buffer against water and fungal decay, and gives the cedar an aged, silvery patina within a few hours of application.
Set Up & Assembly
Natural Cedar Planter Boxes can be set up on any hard, flat surface — patio, deck, courtyard, or driveway. Stack the boards, insert the corner pins, then attach the trim and planter bottom with the included screws. A power screwdriver is recommended. Full assembly instructions are included.
We recommend letting the boards sit in a garage, shed, or covered area for 3–5 days to acclimatize before assembly. This helps prevent any cupping, warping, or gapping once the planter is exposed to your local humidity and temperature.
Adding a layer of gravel to the bottom isn't necessary — the slatted cedar base provides drainage on its own. Optionally, line the inside with landscape fabric to prevent fine soil from washing through the slats.
We do not recommend placing these planters on sod or lawn — the weight will cause the planter to sink into the dirt over time. For gardens on dirt or lawns, see our Natural Cedar Raised Garden Beds.
