Details

Use Insect Dust to eliminate crawling insects around your home. Our natural diatomaceous earth comes from the natural fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. Diatom particles are very small and sharp – but only harmful to the exoskeletons of insects. When insects crawl over diatomaceous earth, the tiny diatom particles cut into the waxy coating of insects and they die from dehydration within 48 hours. Insects cannot become immune to its action as it is a mechanical killer – not a chemical one.

Insect Dust is an EPA registered natural insecticide. Safe to use around your family and pets - it can be rubbed right into your pet's fur.

Insect Dust kills the following insects:

  • Fleas
  • Ants
  • Cockroaches
  • Bed bugs
  • Ticks
  • Silverfish
  • Beetles
  • Earwigs
  • Wood bugs (pill bugs)
  • Crickets
  • Spiders
  • Aphids
  • Spider mites
  • Flies
  • Stink Bugs
  • Tomato hornworm
  • Slugs

For Indoor Use:

Lightly coat a thin layer in areas where insects are found or may hide. For example: kitchen cupboards, behind and under appliances, baseboards, or drain pipes. For carpets, lightly sprinkle the insect dust over the carpet, and leave for 2-3 days before vacuuming.

Leave the insect dust in place until you no longer see any signs of insects in that area, at which point you can clean it up.

Fleas

Thoroughly dust carpets and pet's bedding or sleeping areas, as well as cracks and baseboards. It can be rubbed into your pet's fur.

Bedbugs

Take apart bed and dust joints and channels. Dust any hollow tubing and the interior framework as well as the mattress and all cracks in the room. Use a turkey baster or duster to apply clouds of the dust over the affected area. Leave the dust to do its job for a few days. It is still safe to sleep in your bed even while the dust is present.

Silverfish

Lightly dust under the sink, inside drawers, or along the baseboards, and wherever else silverfish are found.

Carpet Beetles

Thoroughly dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under furniture, carpet, and rugs, and in closets and shelving.

For Outdoor Use:

Lightly coat a thin layer where insects are found. Areas such as patios, porches, window sills, door frames, foundations, drain pipes, and pools. Apply as a barrier around plants, trees and vegetables gardens. You need to reapply insect dust after heavy rainfall.

Fire Ants

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth directly on the ant mound, or mix with water to saturate the mound. It can also be sprinkled along ant trails. The ants will track the DE back to their nests where the colony will be exposed to its abrasive action.

Flies

Thoroughly dust areas where flies gather (livestock pens, kennels, corrals etc.). It also can be applied to livestock coat as a contact insecticide. DE can also be added to food for pets and livestock. DE helps as a deworming agent for livestock, and it ends up in their dung. Flies lay eggs on the dung which hatch into maggots, which are then killed by the DE. Effective method for fly control, especially on farms and homesteads.

Slugs, earwigs, and other garden pests

Apply as a barrier around plants and garden beds. For best results, reapply after rain. If diatomaceous earth washes into the soil it will continue to benefit your garden by retaining water for future slow release into the soil. OMRI Listed for use in organic agriculture.

Lice control for chickens

Lice are a common scourge around chickens and can lower their vitality resulting in fewer eggs and low disease resistance. Set a "dusting box" of DE in the corner of the coop and the chickens will continually apply themselves with DE. This will reduce or eliminate lice within a few days.

Safety

Environmental Health Coalition refers to Diatomaceous Earth as one of the least toxic insecticides for household pest control. As an EPA-registered insecticide, it is required to have a generic health warning on the label, despite its safety.

Please note: Insect Dust Diatomaceous Earth should not be confused with "Pool Grade" diatomaceous earth for pools or water filtration systems. Pool Grade DE has been heat treated, causing the formerly amorphous silicon dioxide to become crystalline, and it is not safe or effective for household pest control.

    • We are having a flea problem. I'm looking for natural ways to deal with the problem as I have an 11 month old that crawls all over our floors. We have already tried a natural spray, but it seems to only work for one day and then he and my husband end up with bites again. Is your product safe for infants and how long after application would you say it's safe to allow him back on the floors?
    • DE is safe for infants when used in the home. DE is a fine powder, so it can be a lung irritant if inhaled directly and in some quantity. But you should locate DE where it is not readily accessible by an infant. We put DE behind furniture, on top of cupboards and in other discreet locations. This also keeps the DE out of reach of the vacuum which would suck it up.

DE is not an instant overnight control for insects. It has a cumulative effect, so allow a week or so before you begin to evaalutate its effectriveness.

    • Would like to know if it is safe to turn on air conditioner or fans after applying DE to carpet? My house is all carpet and that is fixing to change after rennovations. I was concerned about the dust floating about. It smells almost chalky in here. I suppose that is normal?
    • While it is safe to use diatomaceous earth in homes with air conditioning, you should avoid placing it near vents and fans, as the dust should not be inhaled.

  • From Paula at 6/2/12 8:29 PM
    • I have pet parrots and I know their respiratory systems are much more sensitive than other animals. I'm leary about using anything around them. Is DE safe to use around parrots?
    • DE is safe to use around pets. However, if you intend to use DE in close proximity to the parrot, e.g. in the cage, then it is recommended to try a small smaple at first and observe the bird for a week before adding more.

  • From Alice at 5/31/12 3:29 PM
    • I have a lot of slugs this year, after a couple of years of good control with bait, DE, and hand picking. I also have lots of plants to protect in my woodland garden. How do I apply DE adequately and efficiently for this application? Glad I found this site. I no longer feel like I need to climb into a hazmat suit to work with DE!
    • To apply the food-grade diatomaceous earth directly to plants, it might be best to mix the insect dust into a solution of water and spray the plants directly. The diatomaceous is most effective when it's dry, but this is likely the easiest way to coat the plants without making a mess. We also have the dispenser tube available, which allows you to control where and how much diatomaceous earth you are applying. You can find more information about that here: http://eartheasy.com/non-toxic-pest-control/outdoor/lawn-garden-dispenser-tube . Finally, if you have any old baby-powder shakers, those work well for spreading the diatomaceous earth on your plants and evenly throughout the garden.

  • From Debbie at 5/30/12 2:56 PM
    • How much do you add to the pets food?
    • This will depend on the size and type of your pet. Here are some estimates:

Pets less than 10 lbs: 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp every day
10-19 lbs: 2 tsp every day
20-50 lbs: 1 TBs each day
50-100 lbs: 2 TBs each day

Particularly small pets, such as hamsters or gerbils, should get 1/4 tsp each day.

    • how do i go about killing spiders with de. my house is over run by common house spiders.
      .
    • Diatomaceous Earth is effective on common house spiders. The best way to use diatomaceous earth is to spread it in problem areas where the spiders are commonly seen, as well as near any areas from which they may be entering. This may include doorsills or window frames. You can also apply the diatomaceous earth to your carpets, but you will have to reapply it after vacuuming.

  • From elizabeth at 5/1/12 10:55 PM
    • does it work for bed bugs???????????????????
    • Yes. Diatomaceous earth will kill bedbugs. You need to be strategic in placing the DE where the bed bugs will cross it. We place it on the ledge of the metal frame beneath the bed, and along the edge of the wall behind the bed. Bed bugs may scale walls in order to descend upon beds and other places to find food.

  • From Sandi at 4/6/12 8:17 AM
    • I am looking for something that would be safe to combat roaches ON the kitchen counter. Could DE be used for this if we did not place food directly on the counter after application? Is it safe to put inside the cupboards with dishes, etc? Any other suggestions other than those already cited in the web site?
    • Yes, it is safe to apply DE in the places you have described. One other spot to apply DE is on top of the cupboards, if there is a space. Remember, DE does not kill instantly on contact, it takes at least a few days to start being effective, and if yo have a persistent roach problem then you may want to leave DE in discreet areas permanently. (In places like the tops of cupboards, one application of DE will last indefinately since this space is rarely vacuumed.)

  • From Lynne at 10/24/11 1:16 PM
    • Hi, If the cat licks his fur after I rub it into his fur, is this safe for him? How often should I reapply this after the first application? Is it safe to rub into areas where he sleeps? Will it cause any harm for him to breath this product? I notice we should wear a mask when applying, as I have a breathing problem, but what about the cat breathing this? Our cat came to us with a wheeze from the shelter, but since he's been with us it's gone away, but I still worry about dust affecting his breathing. Thank you~L.
    • Your cat should have no problem with exposure to diatomaceous earth. However, with any new product brought into your home, we suggest that you try it in a small amount first to see if your cat has any reaction. We have not received any reports of this over the years we have been selling DE.
In our experience, the effectiveness of DE is realized mostly when it is applied to an area, such as your cat's bed or areas in the home the cat may frequent. Application directly to the fur is done by pet owners, but we believe the benefit is secondary when compared to controlling fleas in the nearby environment.
Results of using DE are not immediate. It takes a few days or longer before you can expect a reduction in the insect population in your home. The effects continues over time. We reapply DE in certain areas of our home every 4 - 6 months.

  • From Lauren at 8/31/11 11:45 PM
    • Is DE safe to apply around children since it is "food grade"? My child may have asthma too.
    • Yes. Diatomaceous Earth is safe to apply where children are active. You should apply DE in areas where the vacuum will not suck it up during regular cleaning, but otherwise there are no restrictions to its use. DE is safe for children and pets, and will not trigger your child's asthma.
We have used DE in our home for several years and it has been very effective at controlling insects. My son has asthma and we have not noticed any adverse effects from using DE.
