Details

The Jora JK125 Composter lets you make perfect compost from your household waste quickly and easily. It is a 'continuous-use' dual chamber composter, so you can add new material to one compartment while the other matures.

It is ideal for rapid composting of kitchen scraps and light garden waste. Suitable for smaller households with 1 to 4 people.

Features & Benefits:

  • 'Continuous-use' dual chamber composter
  • Durable, rust proof galvanized steel construction
  • Holds 4.5 cubic feet (33 gallons) of compost
  • Operating capacity: 2-4 gallons per week
  • Side vents provide aeration, and speed up composting
  • Reduces or eliminates odors
  • Fully-enclosed and pest resistant
  • Rodent proof - elevated so rodents cannot access waste
  • Set up to be either freestanding or mounted

Construction:

  • Exterior: galvanized, powder-coated steel panels
  • Insulation: 2.16" polyethylene - a stable, non-toxic plastic
  • Stand: galvanized steel
  • Stainless steel hardware

Rotating Compost:

  • Easy to rotate - simply turn by hand after adding waste
  • Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste
  • Adds air to the mixture, providing oxygen that is vital for the process

Insulation:

The composting process generates heat and different microorganisms work at different temperatures. The insulation in the JK125 composter allows the temperature to rise higher than 160F resulting in faster and more efficient processing of your organic waste. At these temperatures the process is so rapid that fresh waste starts to break down before it has a chance to rot and attract vermin and flies. With its superior insulation, the JK125 Composter will continue working through winter, long after other composters have stopped completely.

Dual Compartments:

The JK125 is divided into two compartments, so one side can be filled while the other side's compost matures. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost can be emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again.

What can be composted?

  • Raw and cooked food scraps - vegetable, meat or fish
  • Cardboard containers e.g. egg trays
  • Lawn and garden waste
  • Light pet waste (e.g. rabbit or hamster bedding, not dog waste)

The JK125 Composter will accept organic household waste or anything biodegradable. After adding waste, it will take about 6 to 8 weeks for each chamber to produce compost. Once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber every 3 to 4 weeks.

Installation:

We recommend installing the JK125 on the ground rather than mounting it on a wall. If you decide to mount it, you must determine if the wall is strong enough to handle the load.

  • From K at 7/31/10 12:26 PM
    • What is the insulation material?
    • The insulation material for the Jora composter is high-density polyethylene which will not shrink or expand during hot or cold temperatures.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Polly at 3/7/11 2:42 PM
    • How is the compost removed? Does an inner 'drawer' lift out? Is the bin turned up to dump the compost out the opening into a bucket? Thanks!
    • Removing the finished compost from the Jora composters is easy, now that Jora has redesigned its composters to have a separate door for each of the side-by-side bins. To empty the compost, wheel your wheelbarrow under the composter, or set a bucket beneath it, and open the door of the chamber with finished compost. As you turn the drum, the compost will spill out into the barrow or bucket. The other chamber has the door closed so it won't empty.

The original Jora had a single door covering both compartments, which made it more difficult to remove the finished chamber. The new design is a great improvement.

  • From Michele at 3/16/11 7:35 PM
    • I am a single woman. I rent. I eat home at lot, so I have quite a bit of food scraps. What size Jora would you recommend?
    • Hi Michele,
I think the Jora JK125 Composter - 4.5 Cubic Feet is the right model for you. If you were growing a small garden or tending a yard you might want the larger model, but otherwise the 4.5 cu ft model should be ample.

  • From Flav at 12/5/11 8:02 AM
    • I live in Miami, Florida, and I am interested in purchasing the JK125 composter. Since very rarely we have freezing temperature downhere, I was wondering if the insulation in the composter could be removed to allow for more useable room.
    • Thanks for your question. The insulation cannot be removed from the JK125. Even in warm temperatures, like you would experience year round in Miami, the insulation is necessary to create an environment where temperatures can reach 160F to allow fast and efficient breakdown of food scraps (including meat and fish!). While the insulation does take up some space, it increases the efficiency of the composter considerably.

  • From Liz at 1/6/12 2:54 PM
    • Will the composter work in a very shady area (in southern NM so quite warm much of hte time).
    • Yes, the Jora will work fine in your area. The shade will not affect the composting process. The Jora is well insulated and will be effective in any environment. If the outside temperature is high, then the composting process will be that much faster.

  • From Linda Vaughan at 5/29/12 11:22 AM
    • I am a single woman living alone, and will be starting a very small garden spring 2013 - 8 feet by 3 feet, for a couple of tomato plants, pepper plants, cucumber and some herbs. I do not have any yard work to take care of - just this small garden. Will the Jora 125 be large enough?

Also, I do not plan on ordering until Jan 2013 - will you have this item in stock at that time? Thanks a bunch for your time with these questions.
    • Yes. The JK125 is a good size composter for the requirements you describe.

We will continue to stock the Jora composters through 2013. We think they are the best available, and have two Jora's at our home too!
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Liz at 1/19/13 10:29 AM
    • The Jora composters look just about perfect. I read somewhere that the insulation will not leach into the compost. Does this mean that absolutely no chemicals will get into the compost? My garden is organic, so I want to make sure that my compost is too.

      Thanks.
    • The insulation in the Jora will not leach into the compost. Your compost will be as organic as the materials you put into it.
The JK125 is a good size for the average home use. If you have a larger garden you might want to look at the JK270.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Jackie at 4/30/13 9:28 AM
    • Can you use brown leaves in place of sawdust?
    • Yes. Brown leaves are an excellent carbon source. You can also use some finished compost, if available, as an activator. When we empty our composter, a small amount is left in the composter for this purpose.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From cyn at 9/22/13 4:21 PM
    • The diminsions between the JK125 & JK270 are showing the JK125 is taller at 24" to the door handle. Also noticed the note on the picture indicating a tall stand is now available. Does this mean the JK125 can be emptied into a wheelbarrow now or does it still sit closer to the ground?
    • The JK125 now comes with the taller stand as indicated in the picture. With this taller stand it is easy to wheel a wheelbarrow under the composter for emptying. Also, the taller stand means there is no bending over to add materials or spin the drum.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Batt at 10/2/13 4:34 AM
    • Will the JK125/JK270 rust if kept outside?
    • No. The Jora composters are designed to be outside in all weather, all year, even in cold or wet climates.
