The Elevated Cedar Complete Raised Garden Bed Kit is a self-contained garden for your backyard. The "surround-you" design allows easy access to the entire garden. An easy-latch gate keeps critters from entering through the front. The entire garden is constructed from solid cedar that is pre-treated with a water-based stain which further protects this naturally rot-resistant wood. The wide gate makes it easy to bring in a wheelbarrow or a gardening seat, and it allows individuals in wheelchairs to easily access the garden. The 20-inch tall beds are a perfect height to garden in while sitting down, and provide enough planting depth for most popular vegetable crops.

It differs from other garden kits in that it features an elevated HDPE container with drainage holes which hold the soil. This elevated container prevents weeds and pests from getting into your garden.

Features & Benefits:

  • Overall size: 8 feet wide by 8 feet long (64 sq. ft.)
  • Planting bed height: 20 inches tall (not including height of trellis)
  • Planting bed soil depth: 12 inches deep (soil is raised from the ground)

Elevated Container:

  • The garden soil sits in a plastic liner with holes for drainage. This means the dirt does not come in contact with the wood, and no moles or weeds can come up through the bed. HDPE plastic is highly durable, long lasting, and inert. There are no chemicals or substances which could leach into your garden soil.
  • Liner holds approx. 40 cubic feet of soil. The liner sits 7.5 inches off the ground, on a sturdy wood framework.

Irrigation System:

  • Includes soaker hose, battery-operated water timer, coiled garden hose and sprayer

Cedar wood:

  • Wood is treated with a water-based stain to prevent rot. Boards measure 1.25 inches thick.

  • Gate hinges and latches made from rust-proof powder-coated steel
  • Yellow zinc screws

Most of the parts are pre-drilled, but some drilling is required. You must drill a hole to run an irrigation hose through the bed. Assembly can take 2 people up to 8 hours to complete, assuming no prior experience with woodworking. This kit has more pieces to assemble compared to our other complete garden kits. Tools required: drill, mallet, tape measure, pliers, wrench, and a level.

Limited Manufacturer's Warranty covers wood against rot and termite damage for 1-year from purchase date. Other parts covered for 1-year from purchase.

    • I was wondering if you can grow cantolopes and watermelons in these. And does this size grow enough veggies for a family of three or four.
    • Cantaloupes and watermelons grow as long, trailing vines which require a lot of space. They do best when grown directly on the ground because the vines put down small roots every few feet which draw nutrients from the soil. You could start a melon vine in this elevated bed and let it trail outside the garden kit footprint if your yard is fenced from deer.
You can grow plenty of veggies for a family of four, especially since you would likely grow vegetable intensively (mixed and close together). You can also grow beans, peas and climbing crops which add to the yield per suare foot of the garden.

    • Does this kit come with the trellis as shown on the back of the garden? If not, is it an option and what is the cost? Thank you.
    • Yes. The trellis is part of the kit and comes included at no additional cost.

  • From Lance at 9/24/12 7:00 PM
    • I have squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, coons and skunks that seem to love eating herbs and veggies and berries. How will this design keep the crops safe? Also, do you need to refresh the soil at any point? Thanks
    • The garden center comes with a plastic liner which will prevent pests such as moles from digging to reach the garden. As for coons, every garden is vulnerable because they can climb. They can be controlled by using traps or small electric fences that run on solar-power. If you have a dog, this is also a deterrent for all pests. We do have a deer repellent spray that is effective against squirrels, rabbits and raccoons. More information about that can be found here:

As for the soil, all gardens need soil renewed for successive crops. This is done using compost and/or fertilizer. Over time the soil will compress, so peat is added to lighten it. Mulch, such as leaves or grass clippings, will also help restore the soil.

    • We are first time gardeners. We expect rabbits and possibly gophers as visitors. We live in the high desert which can get pretty windy at times. In view of all these factors, do you recommend this product, or is there another one which would be preferable for us. Thank you!
    • Given the conditions you describe, any raised bed which you woud buy will need to be further improved by you to deter the burrowing pests. This is usually done with a sheet of 1/2" galvanized mesh laid on the ground beneath the bed. To do this, cut the mesh 6" longer and wider than the bed, then bend up each edge 3" and staple this 3" strip to the inside of your bed.

The windy environment has implications for gardening, but doesn't impact the style of bed you choose. The Oasis model has the built-in fencing which is a nice feature. It is certainly sturdy enough to withstand strong wind.

In laying out your garden, regardless of which bed you choose, be sure to take the wind into consideration.Learn which direction the prevailing wind comes from and see if there are ways of reducing or deflecting its impact. For example, some beds are situated nest to a row hedge for this purpose. Wind speeds up the surface drying of soil, so you will need to pay attention to ensure sufficient soil moisture for starters and young seedlings. You should also use mulch to protect the soil surface from the wind and keep moisture levels up. The use of mulch is key to success in your growing region.

Here are a couple article which further explain the usse of mulch:

  • From Paula at 10/24/11 9:50 AM
    • What is the total square footage of the beds; what is the width of each bed? What happens when the plastic liner rots? thank you
    • The total square footage of the beds for the Cedar Complete Raised Garden Bed Kit - 8' x 8' x 20" is 40sq. ft. The cubic footage is also 40, since the planting depth is 12".

The width of each bed is 2'.

The plastic liner is HDPE plastic which will not rot, especially since it is not exposed to sunlight. The liner is impervious to soil and water. In our garden we use HDPE plastic to shield roots from nearby trees from entering some of our beds. We have dug up old sheets of HDPE (and also sheets of 6mm polyethylene) that were buried for 15 years, and were still intact and usable.

  • From Kris at 6/27/11 4:50 PM
    • We are getting ready to add organic soil to the container. Since there are drainage holes in the bottom of plastic container inserts, is it still recommended to add dainage rock, such as lava rock, first before adding soil?
    • The Cedar Complete Raised Garden Bed Kit does have a permeable liner which is adequate for drainage. The 20" depth is pretty generous for most vegetable crops and shrubs, however, that if you want to add an initial layer of small rocks down, it would be OK.

If you have the rocks already, then I would suggest using them, since it would further facilitate drainage. However, it is not critical that you need to purchase lava rock or similar drainage rock to get good results from your raised bed.

  • From Shannon at 4/10/11 7:44 PM
    • I have TONS of enthusiastic, high-jumping deer. I love watching them in my meadow, but I want to have a vegetable garden that is safe! Have any of your customers who have bought this product reported any deer-resistance problems? It seems that since it's so high off the ground it should be ok, but better safe than sorry.

Also, how much potting soil should I purchase to fill the garden?

      Thanks you!
    • This bed design is not sufficient to keep out determined deer. It is fine for a fenced yard or enclosure, but in order to keep out deer, you would have to fashion a few uprights to the corners to stretch higher fencing.

We have not had any reports of deer problems with this garden kit, but I would think they took additional measures, as described above, if there were persistent deer problems in their yard.

This bed requires about 40 cubic feet of soil. We recommend using some screened soil if you have this available, and add your own amendments, such as peat, lime, rock phosphate and acompost, if available.

  • From Peters at 4/3/11 6:41 PM
    • Are the cedar beds' wood stained? The picture appears as though it is, but I can not be certain. I do not want the cedar to gray quickly (as it often can), but do not know if you already did that or if I have to plan that into the prep time.
    • The cedar in this Cedar Complete Raised Garden Bed Kit - 8' x 8' x 20" does come pre-stained. This finish gives the cedar the wetted appearance you see in the photo. The stain further preserves the naturally rot resistand cedar wood and keeps it from aging and turning grey as cedar does. It is likely that in the future you will want to apply another coat to mainiain the apppearance. I can't say how long this coat will last, but it should last at least 3 - 4 years.

  • From John at 3/8/11 11:39 AM
    • How leve does the 8x8 area need to be? Also, does the Cedar Complete Raised Garden Bed Kit include the irrigation system (with hoses and timer)?
    • If you are setting this raised garden kit on a solid surface, such as a cement patio or wood deck, the surface does not need to be level. Usually patios drain away from the house and so they are not perfectly level. If you overwater your garden, the water will drain off readily and away from the hose.

If you are setting this garden on the earth, then you have two options regarding levelness. You can dig down on the high side and level the ground where the garden will sit. In this case, the bottom edge of the boards on the high side will taper into the ground and a bit below soil level; the top of the beds will then be level. This is for visual appeal, and will not affect the gardening results.

Finally, you can just set the garden on ground that is not level, if you don't mind seeing the bed is not perfectly level. This is common and most gardeners wouldn't notice or care. (Having said this, in my garden I take pains to make the beds level because I like the way it looks.)

Regarding the irrigation extras, yes, this kit comes with irrigation timer and hose, and also comes with a soaker hose and a sprayer.

  • From Pam at 7/17/10 2:23 PM
    • I have a large concrete patio. Is it possible to place the raised garden bed on concrete? I am concerned about drainage and whether the surrounding concrete will get run-off and become stained.
    • Runoff from water draining through a raised bed will stain the concrete, as you have noted. Most patios are not level, however, and are designed to drain away from the house. You may be able to situate your raised beds on the 'downhill' side of the patio where runoff is directed into the yard. You could check with a level to see if there would be significant directional runoff than might work for you.

worth the work to assemble!

By Derek on 10/30/10

All my reviews  (1)

It took my dad and I all day to put this together but wow it looks good.
I like that the gate opens out because I can back my wheelbarrow into it.
My dad used stainless steel screws because he says the coated screws can wear over time and wet weather, and bleed a small stain onto the wood. Just thought you might want to know.

lovely garden

By deb and don on 1/19/11

I'm buying your Raised Garden Center to accompany the 8 x 8' kit we bought last spring. Just wanted to mention that we had many compliments on our garden during a party we had in the fall, when the garden was in full bloom. It is a lovely garden.

Well Designed & Reasonably Priced

By Louis on 11/17/11

All my reviews  (1)

I recommend this product if you are looking for a good size raised planter. It is well designed. The soil does not directly touch the wood. It has a thick liner that drains water. It takes a while to put together, but directions are clear. I assembled it by myself, but on a few steps it would have been helpful to have an assistant. i graded the ground and placed weedblock below the unit. I followed an earlier review and used stainless steel screws, not sure if it was necessary, but I had a problem one time with a redwood bridge from another supplier so I didn't want to take a chance. Deck screws would also work well and maybe cheaper than stainless. This unit comes with an irrigation timer , soaker hose and coil hose.

Eartheasy was great to deal with. The delivery was very fast and one piece was damaged in shipping. I called up and it was replaced right away sent fed ex. I am always weary of buying on the internet and am very happy with this company and would buy from them again.

Nice product, excited to use for this season

By Backyard garden farmer on 4/22/13

The product arrived in perfect condition. I was impressed that every piece of wood was stained on all sides. Many manufactures would cheap out and only stain sides that face out. The instructions were easy for the most part to follow. It took me and a friend 4 hours to put together. We never had any trouble until we tried to put the trip caps on that sit over the plastic tubs. Note to self... Make sure that the bucket supports are flush with the very bottom or base of the unit or the plastic buckets will sit too high. I was impressed with the quality of the wood and how stable the structure was when finished. I purchased my own screws to ensure that they would not rust in the cold/wet Michigan weather. You can tell a lot of time was spent designing this product to be as easy to install as possible. The wood split very little but you have to be very very careful when working with the smaller pieces. My only con is that the hose holes were not pre-drilled. You need a 1 and 1/4 inch spade drill bit for 3 holes. I don't see why these holes were not pre-drilled as so many other things like it were already. Overall, I was impressed with the product and hope it gives me many years of gardening. I just hope I can keep the deer away! Happy gardening everyone.

Very pleased with this product

By Traci on 5/10/13

As soon as I saw the price of this kit, it was a no brainer. I priced just the cedar alone to hand make something similar and it was $300 just in wood. The assembly took my step-dad and I two days because as mentioned in another comment, we didn't put the bed supports in high enough and the edge pieces wouldn't lock them in so we had to redo all of the braces.

The other thing to be careful of is the placement of your screws on the edge pieces, too low and you will not catch the edge piece but too high will split the wood on the side panels. I wish they had cut the horizontal edge pieces a bit longer.

The placement of mine is against a tall fence so we had to leave it out a bit and it took about 4 of us to lift it and move it into place. It was fairly easy.

Overall, I am very pleased with this kit. It is very attractive, safe for my organic plants, and comes with more features some other kits didn't even have at double the price. I will be recommending this to friends!
