All-season durable, warp resistant and maintenance-free, our raised garden bed kit with composite timbers is ideal for growing healthy organic vegetables.

Features & Benefits:

  • Two-step terraced raised garden bed
  • Lower step is 6'' tall, and second step is 12'' tall
  • Attractive wood grain texture and color
  • Easy to assemble
  • Includes composite boards, corner joints, and screws

Composite boards are resistant to warping from winter frost, and won't rot from exposure to rain and moisture. Each board is a standard 2 x 6 size (actual dimensions: 1.5" x 5.5") and 44.5" long which creates a 4 foot span from joint to joint.

The connecting joints are made of high impact ABS plastic resin, and the timbers are made of a blend of 62% sustainable hardwood fibers and 38% post-consumer recycled plastic. The timbers go a slightly lighter shade with age because of the wood fiber content.

Installation involves sliding the timber into the joint, and using the included zinc-plated steel screws to secure the timber in the joint. The joints have stakes which are simply pressed into the ground. To create a second level, slide the stake of another joint into the top of the ground-level joint from above. It is helpful to have a power drill to set the screws.

  • From Steve at 1/31/11 11:01 PM
    • What if I wanted 2 4'x8'x24". Also is there a solution so you do not have to put the expensive "dirt" for all 24" depth?
    • Hi Steve,

Yes, you can use the composite timbers with anchor/stacking joints to build a taller bed. And you can build any size bed as long as the dimensions are a multiple of 4.

If you do not want to put dirt the full depth of the bed, then you will have to arrange a false bottom. This can be anything you want, but if can't be plywood or anything that will rot. Bricks or cement would be ideal. However, these may cost more than the dirt.

With most raised bed designs, if you go as deep as 24" you may have some bowing of the sides in the middle of the long span. Any length over 8' will have outward pressure from the soil especially when it gets wet and heavier. Some design like the recycled plastic beds and the natural cedar beds have a cross-piece which prevents this bowing. The composite timber beds do not have this cross support.

If you use a false bottom, then the bowing may not be an issue. I would say any depth over 12" - 18" would preferably have cross-support for spans longer than 8'. If you are handy with tools, you could fashion something yourself. I have used 3/4" aluminum flat stock for cross supports in some of my garden beds. But the composite timber/stacking joint system has no easy place to screw the flat stock into. You may be able to use braided wire and wrap it around the stacking joint. I have not tried this myself.

  • From Don at 1/18/12 6:50 PM
    • In 4x8 two step composite can I use 6" to 12"? Also can any of these be added on to at another time?
    • Yes. You can create any two heights (two-step) you would like with our composite raised bed system. For a 6" and 12" two-step, you will need 11 of the 4' composite timbers, 6 anchor joints and 4 stacking joints. You can purchase these individually from our store.

You can add on to your bed any time you want, and this is really the intent of this system. Gardeners can custom design any size or shape of raised bed. And any model can be expanded by simply adding more of the components. Many of our customers purchase the individual anchor and stacking joints, and the composite timbers as needed. And you can also change the bed design if you decide at a later time, just by reconfiguring the components.
