Questions about the Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Bed - Three Sizes
10 Item(s)
- From Germaine at 6/17/10 12:52 PM
- What is the warranty? How long should we expect it to last? Which color would last the longest? The white one?
- This product has a manufacturers warranty of 50 years! It is expected to last 50 years without degradation, although the color may fade a bit in the sun.
I would expect that a color that would last the longest would be white, although you will not see significant weathering with the other colors. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

- Does this bed have a bottom or it just lays on top of the ground?
- This bed is open to the ground. Raised garden beds do not have bottoms, which allows the plant roots to go deeper into the soil. Growing containers which have bottoms are usually referred to as "planters".

- Are the boards solid? No crosspieces inside?
What holds the toprail on? Is it solid enough that the weight of a 200-lb pound person leaning and sitting on it won't budge it?
We need an 8X* bed. Do you make one? - Yes, the boards of the Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Bed are solid. The material is expremely high quality - besides looking good, it will not expand or shrink or crack due to freezing or very hot weather. It will not fade bacause the color is also solid - it goes fully through the board.
These beds do have cross pieces which notch down over the sides. This prevents bowing which happens to most raised beds over 8' in length if they are not cross supported.
The top rails are made of the same material - solid and tough. The toprail is screwed from beneath, and with some screws from the top. It will hold me easily when sitting and I weigh 185.
Because these beds are solid, they are fairly heavy.
I have one of these recycled plastic raised beds in my garden, which I got as a sample so I could answer questions like yours. (We have over 25 raised beds of different materials in our two gardens.) The recycled plastic one is probably the most attractive of them all, it is very solid, and the construction is very precise. The tongue and groove mortises, for example, are perfictly milled and fit together very nicely.
These beds are available in many sizes, including custom sizes. If you have a special size request, please email or phone Ben at ben@eartheasy.com.

- From Donna Morgan at 1/11/11 1:13 PM
- How high can you build these raised beds? The pictures show 2 high. Can you go higher?
- Hi Donna,
The recycled plastic raised garden beds can only be built two boards (11") tall.
The recycled plastic material is very durable, but it is also heavy and the raw material is expensive. The design cleverly addresses these limitations by making the boards thinner (3/4") than most raised beds. To compensate for the thinness, the boards are tongue and groove the full length which makes the assembled beds very strong. And the corners, being too thin for fasteners, are joined by interlocking "half laps". There is no way a third board can be added to this interlocking system.

- Hi,
I need the bed higher than 11". Can I put it on a base of landscape border stone (4"deep x 6"high) filled in the center with dirt before I add the garden mix?
Thanks - Hi Steve,
Yes, you can set the bed on a raised border of pavers or brick if you want the bed to be higher.

- Are these beds designed to remain in place througout the winter in harsh weather conditions? What maintainance is necessary?
- Yes, the Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Beds are made of HDPE recycled plastic and they can endure the harsh freezes of winter and the hottest days of summer without cracking, fading or weathering. No maintenance is required.

- How easy/complicated is the assembly? My DH is not the handiest of husbands.
- Hi Karen,
The Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Beds are very easy to assemble. They are notched at the corners so you just fit them together, it only takes a few minutes without the need for tools. The boards are tongue/groove so they line up perfectly and add a lot of rigidity to the construction.
Once the bed is assembled, you only need a screwdriver to put in a few screws which keep the sides in place. If you buy a toprail with your bed, there are two screws per corner.
The screw holes are pre-drilled so there's no need for a drill or any power tools.
I put a 4 x 8 bed together in less than 10 minutes.
My suggestion is to build it on a flat hard surface, like the patio or garage, and then carry it to the garden. It's harder to put together on grass or any uneven ground.

- I love the idea of recycled material and the fact that the product will look great over time, even sitting out in the elements. I am concerned though, about leaching from the plastic into the soil/plants. Especially when the product heats in the sun. Do you have any studies or information on the makeup of the plastic?
Thank you. - The Recycled Plastic Raised Garden Beds are made of 100% recycled HDPE (high density polyethylene). Users should not be concerned with plastic chemicals leaching into the soil.
The material is stable and maintenance-free even in extreme weather conditions. HDPE plastic is stable to temperatures of 248 degrees F. Building materials made of HDPE lumber usually carry a 50-year warranty.
HDPE is excellent for any food related products, FDA, NSF, and USDA approved for direct contact. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

A very good product
By on 4/22/11
When it comes, it is heavy - 75 pounds. I ordered two. I opened one and to my surprise there were no instructions and no screws. So I set out to figure out how to put it together. Took me probably 15 minutes. When I opened the second one, there was the instructions and screws. Ha. I actually had done it right. That's how easy it is to assemble.

attractive and solid

I purchased the large raised bed last year and didn't assemble it until spring. It was very easy to put together. I plan on buying the smaller size for next year. I did not get the top rail and don't miss it at all.
These are well made and seem as if they will last forever.

pretty deluxe

Well these are very expensive but the quality shows. The material for the boards is beautiful, solid, smooth, very strong. The color is solid too so if you scratch them the color is the same.
The box was heavy, real heavy. The boards bowed, but once together they were very rigid becasue of the tongue & groove design. Very well designed, I would say.
I think these beds will last forever, they look so tough.
ps we did not get the top rail, which I regret. So am ordering one today.
