New 2013 revised design: higher quality with easier assembly!

A beautiful and natural self contained raised garden bed or planter in which to grow organic vegetables or flowers on patios, balconies and restricted spaces. This garden planter is easy to tend while standing or sitting on a stool or wheelchair.

Besides being an attractive and useful elevated planter for any gardener, this design is especially practical for those of us with limited mobility.

The double-slatted base easily holds the weight of a full load of potting soil. The permeable liner which covers the slatted base is heavy-duty. This keeps the soil from drying out, while allowing excess moisture to escape.

We at Eartheasy have several of these planters on our own patio, and recommend them highly from first-hand experience.

Elder-care facilities and institutions looking to purchase these using a Purchase Order, please email info@eartheasy.com for more information.

Features & Benefits:

  • Planter box widths are 37 1/2" by 37 1/2"
  • Planter box depth is 8''
  • Available in three heights: 15", 24", 36"
  • Holds 6.3 cubic feet of potting soil
  • Made of natural, unstained weather-resistant western red cedar
  • The bottom is made of two layers of crossed slats for superior strength
  • The liner is a heavy-duty fiberglass weave, which holds the soil in, but lets the water drain out
  • Restricts ground pests such as rabbits and moles

  • The 24" high model is wheelchair and stool accessible which facilitates gardening for the handicapped and senior citizens. People in wheelchairs garden side-ways to the planter.

The 36" high size lets you comfortably stand and garden at waist height.

Each planter model has an interior planting depth of 8" which is suitable for most plants. Roots of large plants branch out through the dirt and can be staked up for stability.

    Construction

This product is made by people with disabilities in Illinois as part of a community program to integrate them into the workforce. Your purchase is supporting a great program! Plus, you're supporting Eartheasy, a family-owned business committed to promoting sustainability.

The bottom is made of cedar slats covered with a water-permeable liner which holds the soil in place. Planter box dimensions are 3' x 3'. The interior planting depth is 8".

    Assembly time: 30 minutes.

Holes are pre-drilled and all hardware and instructions are included.

    Use

These planters are recommended for use on decks and patios. We do not recommend that these be placed on lawns or ground that can become uneven. Because these planters are supported by tall legs, it is important that they are level to ensure their structural integrity.

We also recommend only using light weight potting soil, and planting vegetables that are not very heavy. (Potatoes and squash are not recommended, for example). If the planter is overloaded, or filled with heavy soil, the bottom may begin to bow out.

Editor's Note: We own two of these raised container beds and we love them. Over time they will turn to a silver-grey color if left untreated. But I recommend you give yours a coat of tung oil finish to maintain the red-gold cedar color. It took me 15 minutes to apply the finish, and cost about $1 worth of tung oil (a quart costs $10-$15).

      • What vegetables are best for these planters?
      • Most shallow and medium depth rooting vegetables are best for this planter. We have a salad garden in ours (lettuce, radishes, chives, cherry tomatoes). Here is an article which shows the soil depth requirements for popular vegetables:

      • Do you recommend painting or staining the wood?
      • We have two of these planters on our patio, and I did coat them with non-toxic tung oil finish.

These planters are made of cedar, and do not require stain or protective finish. Over time, the golden-brown color of the cedar will turn silver-grey. The wood retains its integrity however. People only need to apply a stain or finish if they want to preserve the golden-brown color of the cedar.

I think these planters are very attractive, and the wood is planed smooth (unlike many cedar planters which use rough cedar). They do look great when given a tung oil finish, especially on patios which have finished wood decks or rails.

      • I'm interested in growing some lettuce, radishes, carrots, herbs & tomatoe plant. Is that too much?
      • I think you could grow these simultaneously in the 3' x 3' planter. However, carrots are a root crop and the soil depth of the planter might be a bit shallow for carrots.
Make sure to plant the tomato in the back of the planter so it does not shade the other crops. The tomato will be tallest of the plants you want to grow. You will need to stake it or use a wire tomato cage.

      • Is assembly required or does it come already assembled?
      • The Square Cedar Raised Garden Planter is shipped in a flat box and is partly assembled. The sides sections are already together. You have to screw the legs to the sides, insert the cross slats and bottom liner. and screw on the four caps which top each corner.
I have assembled several of these planters and it took me 10 - 15 minutes each.

    • From Lenora Parker at 3/17/11 10:10 AM
      • Can this planter be disassembled without damaging it, and then reassembled? I want to use several of these at my daughter's reception and them move them to our home. Thank you.
      • Yes, the Square Cedar Raised Garden Planter can be easily disassembled and then reassembled to be used again. The four prefabricated sides are nailed and not meant to be taken apart, but all assembly done by the purchaser is done using screws. So you can unscrew the planter sides and legs, and it can be moved to a new location and then reassembled. Also, when disassembled, the planter can be stored flat, so it takes up very little space.

    • From Cathy at 2/27/11 11:33 AM
      • How much space is needed in these beds for tomatoe plants?
      • Tomato plants should be spaced 18" - 24". You could grow one or two tomato plants in these planters, and still have room for other veggies like salad greens, one or two broccoli plants, etc. You would need to provide a stake or tomato cage for the tomatoes since they are climbers and would collapse without support.

      • We would like to ship to Hawaii and Alaska but the cost of shipping is prohibitive. Customers don't want to pay this added cost, and if there is any problem with the order, returns are subject to the same shipping cost again, which can often exceed the valus of the product. Products shipped by boat may lower the shipping cost but the time it takes is a barrier to sales. We have struggled with this because we would like to serve these states, but these costs and time delays are a real roadblock.

    • From Joy at 2/25/11 2:18 PM
      • Has anyone with a wheelchair used this product. Can the chair get under the tallest one?
      • Yes. We have supplied these planters to facilities for the handicapped, and we have also tried them ourselves, using a wheelchair. The 36" model is tall enough that a person in a wheelchair can have their knees under the planter so they can be close enough to tend it. The downside of this model height, however, is that the gardener needs to raise their arms higher to tend the bed, and this may be uncomfortable over time for some people.

We also had an occupational threapist (who specializes in gardening for the elderly and handicapped) give them a try, and she suggests that even though a person in a wheelchair can fit their legs beneath the 36" model, the 24" model was preferable to wheelchair users. With the 24" model, the user wheels alongside the planter and works it from their side rather than front-on. The gardener can work comfortably without having to lift their arms to tend the bed.

You can see in the product photos there is one of a person in a wheelchair tending the bed. In this picture, she is working alongside the 24" model.

    • From Barbara J. at 2/10/11 1:54 PM
      • Will the wooden legs hold up if placed in the yard as opposed to on a patio or deck?
It the yard is a little uneven, how do you recommend leveling it?
      • Hi Barbara,

The wooden legs of the Square Cedar Raised Garden Planter will hold up if the planter is set on the ground (lawn or dirt). However, I recommend that you set it on blocks. This is because the end-grain of the legs would wick moisture upwards, staining the bottom of the legs and, over time, decaying the wood. If you don't like the way it looks on blocks, you can set the blocks into the ground so only a 1/4" shows.
To level the bed, adjust the depth of the blocks. (The blocks can be anything - brick, patio pavers, or short pieces of 2 x 4 lumber.)

        Greg

We bought two of these raised planters because my mother (and myself) have bad backs. When assembling them, one of the boards was slightly out of place, which I had to fix.
I didn't expect the base to be so sturdy. A person could stand on it is so strong.
These beds are nicer than I expected.

    worth adding a finish

    By Lena on 11/15/10

I am ordering a second oneof these planters, but I wanted to point out one thing. We have one of these we bought last year and it's great, but there is a small stain beneath each of the screws on the weather side of our bed. My husband says that if we Varathaned it this would not happen.
I think these are beautiful planters and worth the time to finish so they retain their golden color and the screws don't stain the wood.
You could also use stainless screws.

    super convenient

    By angela on 11/17/10

I gave one of these raised planters to our neighbor who is not able to get around very well. She keeps it right next to her patio door and grows herbs in it. She is absolutely thrilled with it and even gave us a photo of it to show off her herb garden.
I was surprised at the fuss she made. She is older and cannot bend down well (although she has plants on every square inch of her place) and I guess this is the main attraction. Anyhow it was a wise purchase and I'm here to get another as a present for someone.

    Too nice to leave unfinished

    By bev on 11/30/10

We got the 36" tall model last summer and I am ordering two more. These are lovely planters.
The soil is deep enough for a salad garden. We even had a large broccoli plant in it. The planter is very sturdy and we had no drips onto the patio. But the base will drip water through if you overwater.
The wood is beautiful and deserves to be finished with varathane, as another commenter mentioned. I prefer the natural wood color more than the silver color it turns after a while.

One of your planters was given to us as a gift last year, and one bottom support was pulled loose. My hubby saw this thankfully before we put in the soil, and he fixed it. I think it's a lovely planter though.

    Very nice!

    By jane on 4/25/11

I'm happy with this planter. It looks great--very substantial. Only thing was assembly was not easy. I'm decent at putting things together and I had to enlist my handyman to get it done. He made it look perfect, though, and I'm very satisfied with the end product.

This is beautifully made and works extremely well for an herb garden on our deck. I did paint
it with an Olympic solid color stain (the same as our deck). I highly recommend this product!

    Sturdy and Looks Great

    By reelbizzy on 4/13/12

    All my reviews  (1)

I bought one planter in December for my vegetable garden. It looked so good after putting it together I ordered 2 more in April. It's as close to the 3 x 3 size it states. It might be approx 1/2" off, but I'm still able to do my SFG so it works for me. I too would love to preserve the natural wood look, but I'm more concerned using something that my seep into my vegetables that will be planted in it.

    Low Quality

I was so excited to place my order for two of these raised beds. They did arrive quickly and well packaged. However, I was really not impressed with the quality of cedar for the price paid. I have not filled my raised beds yet, still working on that....It was easy to put together but the reason I gave it a 3 is for the quality of cedar.
