The Food Map Container is built especially for this purpose. The bottom is molded and cut to form a contoured drainage system (see diagram below). Excess water can drain through the holes, but some water is retained in the central reservoir. If the soil becomes dry, this water can wick upwards and sustain the roots until the next watering.
The container is made in Los Angeles from 100% post-consumer recycled food-grade HDPE plastic (from recycled milk jugs) and is completely recyclable. HDPE is a non-toxic weather resistant plastic ideal for growing in. It’s also Bisphenol A and Phthalate free! The frame is powder-coated metal tubing, which should be weather resistant and rust free for years. The wheels are rubber casters so it wheels along easily on patios.
For those of us who have limited space in which to garden, the Food Map Container Garden is a great product. A Food Map Container can easily fit on most urban patios, and even apartment dwellers have had success growing vegetables in it on their tiny decks.
Due to its raised height, many elderly individuals - and those in wheelchairs – appreciate not needing to bend over to garden.
If needed, it can be rolled to different areas depending on sunlight, wind, hail, or any other weather condition you want to take into account.

- Can I use this indoor? Does it drain out the bottom?
- The Food Map Container will drip water out of the bottom drain holes if you have overwatered the soil. Under ordinary circumstances there will be no dripping from the bottom, but the drainage holes are provided if there is too much water. If you want to use this indoors, you will need to take care not to overwater, or else put a small drip catcher beneath. The lid from a small tote, for example, would catch any drips from overwatering.
