Details
Milky Spore targets and effectively works to attack and kill the white grubs of Japanese Beetles, a familiar destructive summertime pest. Milky Spore is a naturally occurring host-specific bacterium (Bacillus popillae-dutky) first developed by the USDA to control lawn grubs.
At the immature beetle stage, the Japanese Beetle grub feeds on the roots of grass and other shallow-rooted vegetation. The grub can be a scourge to lawns especially. The adult beetle feeds on fruits, flowers, shrubs, garden plants and the foliage of some field crops.
In areas treated by Milky Spore, the spores are swallowed by grubs during their normal feeding patterns. Then, this natural bacteria consumes the grub from the inside, which eventually kills it within 7-21 days. As the grub decomposes, it releases billions of new spores and these multiply and kill other grubs. It does not affect other beneficial insects in your lawn.
Milky Spore is not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or humans. It will not affect wells, ponds or streams. The product is approved and registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Application Instructions:
Coverage: 10 oz. can treats 2,500 square feet and the 40 oz. can treats 10,000 square feet
You can treat your lawn at any time of year when the ground is not frozen. It works best to apply just before rainfall or water in lightly after application to soak spores into soil.
Apply one teaspoon of Milky Spore powder on top of grass every 4 feet in rows 4 feet apart, which should look like a grid pattern when finished. Areas between direct applications will be inoculated naturally. Highly efficient control cannot be expected until the entire area is inoculated. Milky Spore is a one time application and it has been known to last 15 years or longer with one application.
The ideal way to combat area infestation is through organized community efforts. Large areas treated with Milky Spore can result in long term control.
Milky Spore can be applied with a dispenser tube, click here.
Or, you can make a homemade dispenser by attaching a 1 lb. coffee can with 15 nail holes to a 4 foot stick six inches from the bottom.

Questions about the Milky Spore Powder Japanese Beetle Control - 40 oz

- We have a fenced in back yard for our 2 small dogs (one 11 lbs., one 16 lbs) to go outside. We don't use any chemical products in the back yard. We've had a prevalence of Japanese beetles this year, & now have an infestation of Japanese beetle grubs in parts of our back yard. Of course, as a result we've had many birds (during day), raccoons, skunks, & possibly cats (at night) tear up the spots where the grubs have weakened the sod. I've raked the loose sod up, & as a result we've got big bare spots in the lawn. We're going to plant grass again, but first have to get rid of the grubs. I should also add both our dogs eat grubs as if they were a favorite snack.
This website, http://www.biconet.com/biocontrol/bpopillae2.html says..." Milky Spore disease then begins to cripple the grub, and within the next 7-21 days will eventually die. As the grub decomposes, it releases billions of new spores...Milky Spore is not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or man. The product is approved and registered with EPA, Milky Spore will not affect wells, ponds or streams." My question is if my dogs, & other critters eat crippled, dying grubs...how can that not be harmful? - Milky spore is harmless to pets. Grubs affected by milky spore pose no threat to your dogs.
