Product Description
NatureMill has made numerous improvements over the prior models, including as a stronger motor, a more powerful air filter, and an energy-saver mode.
It’s easy to use the NatureMill. Lift the lid, and just dump your food scraps in. The composter will automatically mix, heat, and aerate these scraps in the upper chamber. Compost is then transferred to the lower chamber where it continues to compost. The moist air (most of the food’s weight and size is water) is sucked out through a carbon filter which removes the composting odors. After two weeks, a red light will come on to let you know it’s time to remove the lower chamber and put the compost in your garden or on your potted plants.

Getting to Know Your NatureMill
Everyday Use of Your NatureMill
Warranty
For a one year period after purchase: free replacement parts, repair by field technician, or replacement of entire unit. Return an unused unit within 30 days for a full refund. Due to the biological implications of composting, returns generally not accepted after contact with food waste.
Cleaning and maintenance
Wipe the hopper and exterior with a moist towel. Rinse the cure tray and drip tray when you empty them. Do not disturb the compost cultures in the reactor chamber. Do not use soaps or chemicals. Replace air filter every 5 years or as needed.
Improvements
- Stonger Motor: Motors used to jam on large or hard composting tasks. So we doubled the motor strength, without increasing energy consumption. A new grinding feature devours stubborn compost items. And if a jam occurs, the motor will try again every 4 hours until the jam clears.
- More Powerful filter: Our compost bin engineers have refined the "secret recipe" for compost. We've increased air filtration with a new quieter pump and a new carbon filter. The carbon filter is more powerful and lasts 5-7 years. More even heat circulation ensures that corners and edges compost effectively.
- Energy Saver Mode: A new feature, available on all models, reduces energy consumption by 75%. Now you can reduce mixing, heating, and air flow rate when you go on vacation, or if you just do not have much to compost.
- The Little Extras: Some people stomp with muddy boots, while others tip-toe barefoot in the kitchen. So we adjusted the foot pedal on the PRO model for just about anyone. Instruction manuals can be so intimidating - so we added a Quick Start Guide to make operation easier than any compost tumbler. Some people live in rainy places - so we upgraded the waterproofing of the entire unit. We just never stop improving our compost bins!
More Detail
- No worms, bugs, or trash odors: Natural compost cultures consume waste quickly, without odors. They produce a mild aroma like sourdough, mushrooms, or straw. Balance the chemistry by adding sawdust to increase "brown" content, and baking soda to reduce acidity (both are included). A fan draws air into the machine, providing oxygen to the cultures. A powerful carbon filter removes any lingering odors.
- Use it anywhere: Fits inside any standard cabinet. Keep it in the kitchen, a garage, or laundry room. Use it outdoors, even in the snow, rain, or freezing temperatures. Keep the power supply dry, using a weather-rated power outlet (available at most hardware stores).
- Endless supply of compost: Empty the cure tray when the indicator light comes on - roughly every two weeks. More than seventy percent of the initial waste disappears into thin air -- literally -- as compost cultures convert it into water vapor. What's left is a very concentrated compost fertilizer. Fresh compost has a mild organic aroma, which people often describe as damp wool, sourdough bread, or mushrooms. You can use it outdoors immediately, or leave it in a heap until you are ready to garden.
- Good for the garden: Food compost is very high in nitrogen, which is essential for healthy plants. Spread over the soil surface, like mulch. Nutrients will gradually enter the soil during watering and annual tilling. Use it on your garden, lawn, shrubs, trees, or indoor potted plants. One batch of compost is enough for 10-40 sq ft (1-4 sq m) of a lawn or garden, applied once or twice per year. Or use one batch per tree. You can also infuse mature compost with water to brew "compost tea" liquid fertilizer.
- Great for the environment: Energy use is just 5 kwh / month, or about $0.50/month - less than a garbage truck would burn in diesel fuel to haul away the same waste. A NatureMill composter recycles its weight in waste every 10 days, diverting over two tons of waste from landfills over its life. This reduces emissions of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas produced when organic matter decomposes in oxygen-starved landfills. NatureMill is made from recycled and recyclable materials. Every NatureMill composter meets or surpasses the stringent California Energy Efficiency Level IV - the most stringent energy standard in the world.

Questions about the NatureMill Plus XE Automatic Indoor Composter
1 Item(s)
- From Dana M at 11/23/11 8:05 AM
- Is it possible to store the ready compost? Or can I put it on my frozen garden? I live in Alberta and the temperatures have already dipped below -20*. This being said, I can't bear the idea of food waste rotting in the garbage, rather than feeding my garden. Many thanks in advance!
- Thanks for your question. It's a great one!
You can store your compost outside in a pile or in a bin through the winter and all through the year. If you store the compost in a pile, it is best to place it somewhere that weeds will not grow into the pile, on a tarp for example, and to keep it covered so nutrients are not lost during rainfall.
Storing your compost through the winter is better than placing on your frozen garden. To get the maximum benefit from compost, you want to mix it into unfrozen soil, so it is best to wait until the soil in your garden has thawed in the spring before mixing it in. - Do you find this question helpful? Game changing convenience for composting
By on 4/21/11
We've been using our new Pro XE for about two months now, and have established an effective rhythm with it. We tend to generate a lot of scraps on green smoothie binges and with our fruit bat child. The Super Heavy Duty Mode will expedite processing in two to three days. We love this machine and have distributed great looking compost around the yard far more this spring than in when using former, more manual composting methods.

foot pedal is best
By on 11/17/10
This is a great indoor composter but I would recommend that you get the Pro model because it has the foot pedal which is a real convenience. When one hand is holding the plate and the other is holding a fork to scrape the scraps into the Naturemill, you need a third hand to open the lid. So get the model with the foot pedal. You will soon forget the added expense but wil appreciate the convenience for a long time.

fast and fluffy compost
By on 11/17/10
It's a good product. It is amazing how fast it really works. The compost is very rich and fluffed up not like the matted down moldy stuff you get usually from a compost bin. It is easy to use and almost like another trash bin except you don't have to take it out as often and it doesn't stink.

not silent, but nice
By on 11/17/10
We have run this composter for a few months now and with success. I like that you can throw scraps into it and forget it, there's no turning needed. I also like not having to walk the compost pail outside in the rain to the old composter like I used to. So yes i would recommend this. However, two points to note: it is not silent. When the kitchen fan is running you can't hear it but at night i can hear a hum when I go in the kitchen. Also I had to train my dog to keep from pawing at it trying to get at the food scraps. But this was the same with our old compost pail so I guess it's to be expected.
