Details

The LifeStraw personal water filter, a "Best Invention of the Year" (Time magazine) winner, enables users to drink water safely from contaminated water sources. LifeStraw is ideal for homeowners during emergencies such as local flooding which can contaminate drinking water supplies. LifeStraw is also ideal for campers and hikers who may be drinking from rivers or lakes and are unsure of the water safety. Because LifeStraw is lightweight and compact, it is also great for travelers who do not want to rely on the quality of local water.

LifeStraw is the most advanced personal water filter available today. LifeStraw surpasses EPA guidelines for E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium oocysts, rigorous standards for water filtration.

Eartheasy is the official wholesale distributor and retail launch partner for LifeStraw, which as of September 2011 is now available for US and Canadian customers to purchase. Since 2005, LifeStraw has been used in developing countries to assist in achieving the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals for clean drinking water. We’re excited to help launch this useful product in North America.

What LifeStraw removes/filters:

LifeStraw filters down to an incredible, 0.2 microns in size! This removes virtually all the bacteria (99.9999%) and protozoa (99.9%) from contaminated water, and reduces turbidity (muddiness) by filtering out suspended particles.

Bacteria removed include:

  • Escherichia coli,
  • Campylobacter,
  • Vibrio cholerae,
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
  • Shigella
  • Salmonella

Protozoa removed include:

  • Giardia lamblia ("Beaver Fever")
  • Cryptosporidium Parvum
  • Entamoeba histolytica.

Specifications:

  • Length: 9 inches
  • Width: 1 inch
  • Weight: 2 ounces
  • Construction: durable plastic. Does not require replacement parts or batteries, or any chemicals.
  • Capacity: filters up to 264 gallons (1000 liters) of water.
  • Shelf Life: 5 years when stored at room temperature. (Product package may state shelf life of 3 years, but this will be corrected on newer packaging. The actual shelf life is 5 years.)
  • Included: Comes with a lanyard, and a cap for the mouth piece and end piece

How to use:

The patented LifeStraw is a small tube with specialized filters inside. Place one end in unfiltered water (a glass, water bottle, river, or puddle!), and suck the resulting clean water up through the top. Anyone who can use a drinking straw can easily use a LifeStraw.

Before use, uncap the LifeStraw and hold it upright in water for a minute. This allows the water to creep up the filter membrane. Then do five quick sucks and the water will flow easily. When drinking from muddy water, you may have to blow back down into it to purge out the turbidity if the flow slows or stops.

LifeStraw for Travel & Backpacking:

Because the LifeStraw is so small and lightweight, it’s great for travel overseas in countries with unreliable drinking water. If you’ve ever been sick while travelling, you know the importance of drinking filtered water! Make sure to drink all water through the LifeStraw.

LifeStraw for Hiking & Camping:

Access to clean water is critical while hiking. LifeStraw accomplishes the same thing as other filters, but does it at just a tenth of the weight. If you’re ultra-light hiking, this is a must. At only 2 oz, it’s the lightest way of filtering water while on the go. If you consume the recommended 3-4 liters of water per day while hiking, LifeStraw will last you for between 250-330 days of hiking. If you’re in a rush, there’s no need to stop and filter water by the lake. Just scoop your water bottle full, and sip from it as you walk. Or, dip the end of the straw right into the lake and drink until you’re hydrated.

As a hiking or camping water filter, the LifeStraw provides great convenience. A purifier or pump filter is great, but it takes a fair amount of time to wait for the purification or filtering to complete. Instead, experience the convenience of drinking directly from the water source using your LifeStraw. Perfect when you are hiking, or relaxing around camp.

LifeStraw for Emergency Preparedness & Survival:

In light of recent natural disasters, many people are realizing they cannot depend on their city water during an emergency. A water filter that’s lightweight, easy-to-use, and portable is important to have in your emergency preparedness kit. Buy a LifeStraw for each member in your household - it's a low-cost investment in security.

Awards and recognition:

LifeStraw has received significant accolades since its original design was invented in 2005. Time Magazine named LifeStraw the “Best Invention of 2006.” In 2008, it won the Saatchi and Saatchi Award for “World Changing Ideas”. Esquire called LifeStraw the “Innovation of the Year.” And Forbes noted that LifeStraw is “one of the ten things that will change the way we live.” Now that LifeStraw has launched in the USA and Canada, we expect continued positive responses.

History:

LifeStraw is manufactured by Vestergaard Frandsen, which is a Switzerland-based company specializing in disease control products for developing countries. Their core business model is centered around corporate social responsibility, and they help countries reach their United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals with products designed to prevent vector- and water-borne diseases. LifeStraws are shipped throughout the world to countries in need including Haiti, Pakistan, and Africa.

    • I'm concerned that bacteria, once the straw is contaminated, will continue to grow in the dampness between uses....what will keep this from happening?
    • LifeStraw users expel residual water by blowing outward when finished drinking. This removes most of the water. The small amount of remaining moisture evaporates quickly since there is a volume of air within the LifeStraw. There have been no issues with any contaminant buildup within the LifeStraw.

I am thinking of carrying one on my snowmobile for emergencies and as such it could be exposed to severe cold.

Outstanding

By rattler on 4/25/13

Picked up one several months ago from local gun shop (Kelowna, BC). Always with me on the quad or in the boat. Have recommended to friends. Get two, they are not expensive (less than $20.00).

Best feature is size

By dan on 11/19/12

I really like this filter. Easy to use--whether from a puddle or a cup. My only, and it's picky, complaint is that there is no way to filter water for cooking. I suppose you could suck and spit, but...

tough!

By reggie on 7/13/12

My daughter dropped her LifeStrraw from the trail and it tumbled down the rocky hillside about 60 '. I was sure it was broken, but it survived with only scratches. What a tough little filter! Thought you'd want to know.

I got this from an Elk's fundraiser that Eartheasy donated the LifeStraws to, and looked it up for more information. I've had a chance to use it a few times and am quite impressed! I can't believe how much water it's rated to filter, compared to other water filters on the market. I'm going to use it for hunting this fall, and expect to be able to travel lighter. I wish it came in camo color though, but it's not a big deal.

No complaints! Fits in my pocket, I drank from some mud puddles and still feel fine! Joking aside, I'm really concerned about preparedness, and this product is ESSENTIAL in my mind. What good is stored food, guns, and survival stfuff if you don't have reliable water?

Follow-up review

By Mike on 2/23/12

All my reviews  (4)

Just wanted to leave feedback because I've been using the LifeStraw for a while. When you first use it, it'll take a few strong sucks to get the water flowing. Then once the filter membrane is damp, it's easy to sip through. If the filter dries out again, perhaps over a few days of not using it, it takes another few strong sucks to get the water going.

On a hiking trip it was easy to use for every day. Just be sure to blow back into it if the flow stops or when you're finished sipping, that clears the dirty particles out of the pores of the filter.

When I got home, I rinsed it out and let it dry for a day or so before capping the ends and putting it back in my camping gear.

Really recommend it

By Mike on 12/13/11

All my reviews  (4)

To me, this is the best inexpensive filter on the market. It filters many more gallons than the nearest competitor, and it filters down to a much finer micron size.

It's also made by a company with an incredibly reliable track record. I like the fact that my purchase of this helps support aid work overseas too.

excellent product, worth the wait

By Paul Cavallo on 9/29/11

Our business provides items for emergency stay bags, and we have been following the Life Straw development for some time, and waiting for it to be available to US markets. The samples we received live up to expectations - this is just what we are looking for.
We are surprised that the distribution is narrow for this product, and only available from a couple suppliers at retail. I am emailing your office to inquire about quantity distribution and pricing, thank you.

Highly recommend. Everyone should have one

By Dan on 9/28/11

All my reviews  (1)

Got my shipment of LifeStraws from Eartheasy (thanks it was quick shipping!). Tried one out right away, and the murkey water tasted just fine. The others go in my survival kits.

The comment about not filtering out viruses - well that might be an issue in Africa, but water-borne viruses in America are rare. If you want viruses gone, you have to treat the water with chemicals, which you then drink.

Compared to filters in general, this is one of the very best, at 0.2 microns! I did my research!

Great product but not best on the market

By Mike on 9/27/11

All my reviews  (1)

This little straw is quite the little filter. It is great for hiking because is is so light.
But beware, it will not filter anything below .2 microns, which includes viruses.
It is false that is will purify the most contaminated water. It will take most things out of the water but not everything.
The first gen lifestraw had iodine beads which killed any viruses, but this was discontinued and the second gen lifestraw does not have it.
The lifestraw family on the other hand will filter out viruses because it filters down to 20 nano meters.
Great filter, just do your research.

Great little filter

By Richard on 9/26/11

Just got my new LifeStraw a couple days ago and took it out for a test drive yesterday. I found a pretty muddy, stagnant pool that's near my house, got down on my belly and drank right from it with the straw!

I thought it would taste bad but it was alright. It took a few strong sucks through the lifestraw to actually get the water to flow through, but once the water was flowing it was really easy to drink from.

I'm a believer!
