Details

The Kippen House chicken coop is not your typical hen house. It is designed to keep your ladies happy and healthy while also offering garden space for vegetables, herbs or flowers. This helps to maximize your space in urban areas.

The Kippen House is built with materials and hardware suitable for exterior conditions, so it will be around for years. The modern aesthetic will add to your garden and keep your neighbors coming back to admire!

Features:

  • Garden Roof: A 10” deep garden bed – deep enough for your favorite vegetables! – with two drain spouts to eliminate excess water. Your Kippen House comes with layering instructions for your garden bed for water management. The soil on top of the coop will act as an insulator to keep your hens cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  • The Hybrid Solution: By combining the run and henhouse within one enclosure, your chickens do not have to be let out and put away each morning and evening. This frees you to be away for days at a time without having to tend the flock. The Kippen House is spacious enough for 2-4 hens to live comfortably. When you are at home, the chickens should still be let out to dust bathe, eat the gravel they need and explore!
  • Hen House: The hen house portion of the coop is in the upper loft area, raised off the ground and includes a nesting box, roosting pole and ladder for easy access. The hen house is shielded from the rain on the three exterior sides and you can hang burlap or heavy material on the inside in the winter months to stop drafts.
  • Run: The run covers the whole bottom of the coop with a covered area for feeding, water and shelter and an open area for fresh air. The cedar panels along the bottom prevent water from splashing in and keep the entire floor of the coop dry.
  • A closed-loop system: The combination garden-chicken coop offers an unique solution to garden and chicken wastes. Chicken manure is a great fertilizer! You can compost it, along with your kitchen and garden scraps and egg shells to create local, healthy compost for your garden. Chickens love garden scraps as a treat, too!

Sustainability

Keeping chickens and gardening organically is a great way to be a part of the urban homesteading movement - or just to have a great, healthy diet! Steps toward self-sufficiency will help you begin to take ownership and accountability for the food you use to feed your family.

    • why does it look like a nest box for only one chicken?
And is it easy to put together?
    • Only one nesting box is needed for a small flock of fewer than 4 hens since the hens only occupy the box while laying. They take turns using the nesting box.
The coop is easy to assemble since it is made of modular sections.

    • The Kippen House Urban Chicken Coop provides adequate space for up to 4 chickens.

  • From molly at 4/18/12 3:25 PM
    • What kind of wood is this? It looks so natural - is it treated for outdoors?
    • The wood used for the Kippen House Urban Chicken Coop & Planter is red cedar, which is a naturally rot-resistant wood. Cedar does not need to be sealed, but it will fade to grey in a year or two. This color change does not affect the wood's integrity. If you want to preserve the natural reddish color, then you can add a coat of an exterior finish such as tung oil. (Tung oil is non-toxic.)

As you can see, some of the wood is painted. The painted wood is easy to sponge or hose clean, and it adds another level of protection as well as visual appeal. The paint used for this is low-VOC exterior paint.
