Details

The Jora JK270 Composter makes perfect compost from your household waste quickly and easily. It is a 'continuous-use' dual chamber composter. Dual chambers allow you to keep adding new materials to one compartment while the other matures.

With a capacity of 9.5 cubic feet, the Jora JK270 can easily handle daily composting of kitchen scraps and yard trimmings for a family of four or more. For example, it is suitable for larger households, small restaurants, preschools, and care homes.

Features & Benefits:

  • 'Continuous-use' dual chamber composter
  • Holds 9.5 cubic feet (71 gallons) of compost
  • Operating capacity: 6-8 gallons per week
  • Durable, rust-proof galvanized steel construction
  • Freestanding setup with easy to spin side handles
  • Side vents provide aeration and speed up composting
  • Reduces or eliminates odors
  • Fully-enclosed and pest resistant
  • Rodent proof - elevated off the ground

Construction:

  • Exterior: galvanized, powder-coated steel panels
  • Insulation: 2.16" polyethylene - a stable, non-toxic plastic
  • Stand: galvanized steel
  • Stainless steel hardware

Rotating Compost:

  • Easy to spin - simply turn by hand after adding waste
  • Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste
  • Adds air to the mixture, providing oxygen that is vital for the process

Dual Chambers:

The JK270 is divided into two compartments, so one side can be filled while the other side's compost matures. Once one compartment is full, the mature compost can be emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again. You can use the composter continuously, with no waiting between batches.

Insulation:

The composting process generates heat, and different microorganisms work at different temperatures. The insulation in the JK270 composter allows the temperature to rise higher than 160 degrees, resulting in faster and more efficient processing. At these temperatures the process is so rapid that fresh waste starts to break down before it has a chance to rot and attract pests. With its superior insulation, the JK270 Composter will continue working through winter, long after other composters have stopped completely.

What can be composted?

  • Raw and cooked food scraps - vegetables, meat or fish
  • Lawn and garden clippings
  • Cardboard containers (i.e. egg trays)
  • Light pet waste (i.e. rabbit or hamster bedding)

The Jora JK270 Composter will accept organic household waste or anything biodegradable. After adding waste, it will take about 6 to 8 weeks for each chamber to produce compost. Once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber every 3 to 4 weeks.

    • What about the potential for rust?
    • The tubing is stainless steel and the metal parts are powder coated. We've had two Jora's in our back yard for several years and not a sign of rust anywhere.

    • Do you need to add any water to the compost bin? If so, how much and how often? Thanks.
    • In most situations where you are mixing household food waste and some lawn and shrub clippings, you won't need to add water to your composter. Only if you are using very dry materials would you add any water. Your compost should be moist, but not soggy. So as a general rule, you won't be adding water to your Jora.

    • I am wondering what is the distance from the ground to the bottom of the bins? Thanks
    • From the ground to the bottom of the bin is just a bit over 22".

  • From Walt at 9/1/13 9:32 AM
    • I am putting the JK270 together and when I stand it up to tighten the two ends, I hold the nut on the left with wrench and as I turn the nut on the right I notice the treaded rod turns also so the nut does not tighten. How does one stop the treaded rod from turning insid so it tightens?
    • Sorry you are having difficulty with the threaded rod assembly.

It sounds like there may a small burr in the threads on the right end of the rod which is making the rod turn instead of allowing the nut to advance an the threads. Here is what you can do:

Remove the rod or extend it enough that you can get a small pipe wrench or a channel-lock pliers on the rod (do not put the tool directly on the threads where the nut will advance). Hold the rod firmly and use the socket wrench (or crescent wrench) to advance the nut past the burr on the threaded rod.

Now you can hold the wrench on the right side and screw in the nut on the left.

      This should correct the problem.

  • From Lexi at 6/19/13 10:40 AM
    • Can I put compostable plastic bags inside the Jora composter? I'm thinking it would be so convenient to place my kitchen scraps in a compostable plastic bag, and then dump the entire thing in the Jora composter. Would that work? Or would it inhibit the composting process?
    • The composting process would be slowed down. The plastic bag would prevent the scraps from mixing with the active compost and aeration would also be inhibited. One of the great features of the Jora is the ease of spinning the drum. This mixes and aerates the materials to speed the composting process. Using the plastic bags would deprive you of this advantage.
We recommend usiing a compost keeper - it won't tip over, is pet proof, and easy to dump into the composter and then reuse.

  • From Kim at 5/27/13 10:06 AM
    • Do you only put kitchen scraps in it? Does it need anything else? Do you have to put in any dirt?
    • Composters commonly hold more than kitchen scraps. Many materials from the yard and garden are also compostable and these materials help balance the compost for faster and more complete composting. If you were to only add kitchen scraps, your compost would be wet and sluggish, with too much nitrogen and not enough carbon. You will want to add carbon elements, like dried leaves and grass clippings, shrub prunings and sawdust.
Here is page with all you need to know about composting, including a chart of what elements you can add and whether they are carbon or nitrogen-based.

  • From Tara at 10/28/12 7:27 PM
    • Just to be clear, is the total capacity between the two compartments 70 ga (35 ga per compartment)?
    • Yes. The total capacity, combining both compartments, for the JK 270 is 70 gallons (9,5 cubic feet).

  • From Ron at 2/22/12 6:48 PM
    • 1. I presume that the polyethylene surface on the inner walls of the chambers is a very hard surface? (Resistant to all life forms that may inhabit it)
      2. Is the Jora JK 270 designed to be kept under a roof or out in the open?
      3. Is there a location in N C where I might see one.
    • Hi Ron,

The inside walls of the Jora is not a very hard surface. It is a compressed foam insulation, about an inch or so thick. It does not tear easily like rigid foam insulation would but you could poke a stick into it pretty easily. It is firm and does not easily compress. I thought this inner surface was a liability when I first assembled the Jora. But I understand why they chose this material - air is captured in the foam cells which aids insulation while keeping the weight down. The inner surface is not tough but it seems to hold up under reasonable use.

I have two Joras, and have had one of them for 1 1/2 years. So far there has been no apparent damage to the inside walls. They are dirty, but otherwise OK. This composter is left outdoors in the open all year, through snow and freezing and hot sun. Still, if I had the space, I would set it under the eve of the garden shed or some other roof. But they are designed for permanent outdoor use standards.

This is about the 6th type of composter we have had for trials. I would say the Jora is the best one - made of steel, not plastic, has the two compartments for continuous use, and relatively easy to spin.

You would have to do a local Google search to find a local dealer. I would think there is one in your area. I assume you checked out the video on our product page. Also you can check Amazon, they usually have lots of product reviews.

  • From Olivier at 2/5/12 10:15 AM
    • You provide the following dimensions: 44" L x 28" W x 52" H
I suspect 28'' is the width of the bin itself. What about the legs? What's the width of the JK270 measured at the feet? I want to know if it can fit along my side fence.
      Thank you,
      Olivier.
