Product Description
The Jora JK270 Composter lets you make perfect compost from your kitchen waste hygienically and quickly, with the minimum of fuss and mess. And, with a capacity of 9.5 cubic feet, it will easily handle the composting of kitchen scraps and general yard and garden clippings for a family of four.
Features & Benefits
- 'Continuous-use' composter. Dual chamber lets you keep adding new materials in one bin while other matures
- This latest design now has two doors, one for each compartment
- Holds 9.5 cubic feet (70 gallons) of compost
- Fully-enclosed and highly pest resistant
- Reduces or eliminates odors
- Made of extremely durable (and attractive) powder-coated steel
- Operating Capacity: 63 pints or 34lbs per week
- Side vents provide aeration which speeds the composting process
- Easy to spin
Insulation:
The composting process generates heat, and the different micro-organisms start working at different temperatures. The insulation in the JK270 composter allows the temperature to rise higher than 160F (70C), resulting in the quickest and most efficient composting of your organic kitchen waste. At these temperatures the process is so rapid that fresh waste starts to break down before it has a chance to rot and attract vermin and flies. Because of its integral insulation, the JK270 Composter will continue working through winter, long after other composters have stopped completely.
The insulation is made from polyethylene, one of the most stable plastics known. Polyethylene is used for potable water tanks, and it’s also the plastic in grocery bags. There is no contamination from the insulation – it is absolutely non-toxic
Rotation is important because:
- Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste, increasing the efficiency of the process,
- Air is allowed into the mixture, providing the oxygen that is vital for the process
- The JK270 composter is constructed for ease and simplicity of rotation - it's simply turned by hand whenever waste is put in.
Rodent Proof:
The JK270 is sited off the ground so there is no possibility of rodents or other pests gaining access to the waste in the machine.
What can be composted?
The JK270 composter will accept all organic waste generated by a regular household:
- Raw and cooked food scraps - vegetable, meat or fish
- Cardboard, e.g. egg trays
- Garden waste (except hard, woody stems and branches)
In fact, anything biodegradable - even some pet waste, e.g. your rabbit or hamster bedding, but we don't recommend dog waste. Of course, if you add too much yard waste you will run out of room for your household compost scraps.
It will take about 6 to 8 weeks for each chamber from starting to fill to production of compost - so once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber every 3-4 weeks or so.
Construction
Exterior: powder-coated steel panels and galvanized steel legs (rust proof). The steel panels will withstand extreme freezing without developing cracks, and will hold up well to prolonged sun exposure without any deterioration of the finish.
Clips and screws are stainless steel, and will never rust.
Insulation: LDPE (will not leach)
Dual compartments:
The JK270 is divided into two compartments. One is being filled while the compost in the other matures. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost is emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again. You can use the composter continuously, with no waiting between batches.

- How sturdy are the legs?
Will the legs resist corrosion sitting on the ground?
Are the legs heavy duty enough to take the bumping of a wheelbarrow?
Can spare parts be ordered? - The legs of the Jora JK270 Composter are very sturdy. Steel-constructed, with integral cross-bracing, the legs will hold up to the bumping of a wheelbarrow, and they will withstand ground moisture.
We recommend the Jora composter be set on solid ground, or blocked up on cement pavers, and be level.
Spare parts can be ordered, but we do not keep these in stock. Special orders will take longer for us to deliver to you. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

Thanks,
Al - Thanks for your question.
From the time you start using your Jora JK270 composter, it will take about 6 to 8 weeks to generate your first batch of compost. Once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber of compost every 3-4 weeks or so.
The JK270 is divided into two compartments. When you begin using your composter, place kitchen scraps in one compartment. When this compartment becomes full, allow it to mature into compost (about 6 to 8 weeks from starting time) and place fresh kitchen scraps in the second compartment. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost is emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again. You can use the composter continuously, with no waiting between batches.

- Does it matter if the composter is located in the sun, part sun or shade?
- The Jora JK270 Composter is designed to operate efficiently in all weather conditions, so you can locate it anywhere in your yard that is convenient. Placing the composter in direct sunlight can help speed the composting process by adding warmth, but it is not that significant a gain in winter since nighttime temperatures will cool it back down. In summer it doesn't matter, since average temperatures are sufficient for composting.
The most important consideration is convenience. You will be making daily trips to your composter, so locate it where it is easy to access. And since the Jora is a beautiful composter, there is no need to place it in a spot where it is not seen. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

- You provide the following dimensions: 44" L x 28" W x 52" H
I suspect 28'' is the width of the bin itself. What about the legs? What's the width of the JK270 measured at the feet? I want to know if it can fit along my side fence.
Thank you,
Olivier. - The dimensions of the Jora JK270 Composter - 9.5 Cubic Feet are as follows:
Drum:
Side-to-side width of drum is 36"
Back-to-front size (diameter) of drum is 30"
Base:
Side-to-side width of base at widest point (ground) is 45"
Back-to-front depth of base at ground level is 28"
Overall height of composter, including handles is 52"
I will rewrite the dimensions on our product page to make it more clear. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

Jora JK270 Composter
By on 6/10/11
Got this unit before Christmas and finally got around to feeding it. Much easier to use than my old compost tumbler (which gave to my daughter) . So far so good. Been about 4 weeks since I started the process and it is just about done. Heats up really nice which was a hit and miss with the compost tumbler.

looks up to the task

Well it cost enough to get it here! But wow this is a serious unit. I don't know how the plastic composters hold up after years of sun exposure or winter freezes, so I got this steel one which looks like it'll last longer than me.
It looks real well made but I hope the legs hold up if I ram into them with a heavy wheelbarrow.
The handles for turning are a good feature cause where I live its freezing right now and you don't want to put your hands on the steel or they'll be stuck til spring.
I give it four stars for now. If it holds up a few years then give it five stars.
