Details

The Jora JK125 Composter lets you make perfect compost from your kitchen waste hygienically and quickly, with the minimum of fuss and mess. Due to it's insulation, the JK125 has a smaller capacity (33 gallons or 4.5 cubic feet), and as such it won't meet the needs for those people looking to compost all their yard clippings. This composter is ideal for rapid composting of kitchen scraps. It can set up to be free-standing or mounted on a wall.

Features & Benefits

  • 'Continuous-use' composter. Dual chamber lets you keep adding new materials in one bin while other matures
  • Holds 4.5 cubic feet (33 gallons) of compost
  • Fully-enclosed and highly pest resistant
  • Made of extremely durable (and attractive) powder-coated steel
  • Reduces or eliminates odors
  • Side vents provide aeration which speeds composting
  • Easy to rotate
Insulation:

The composting process generates heat, and the different micro-organisms start working at different temperatures. The insulation in the JK125 composter allows the temperature to rise higher than 160F (70C), resulting in the quickest and most efficient composting of your organic kitchen waste. At these temperatures the process is so rapid that fresh waste starts to break down before it has a chance to rot and attract vermin and flies. Because of its integral insulation, the JK125 Composter will continue working through winter, long after other composters have stopped completely.

The insulation is made from polyethylene, one of the most stable plastics known. Polyethylene is used for potable water tanks, and it’s also the plastic in grocery bags. There is no contamination from the insulation – it is absolutely non-toxic

Rotation is important because:
  • Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste, increasing the efficiency of the process,
  • Air is allowed into the mixture, providing the oxygen that is vital for the process
  • The JK125 composter is constructed for ease and simplicity of rotation - it's simply turned by hand whenever waste is put in.
Rodent Proof:

The JK125 is sited off the ground so there is no possibility of rodents or other pests gaining access to the waste in the machine.

What can be composted?

The JK125 composter will accept all organic waste generated by a regular household:

  • Raw and cooked food scraps - vegetable, meat or fish
  • Cardboard, e.g. egg trays
  • Garden waste (except hard, woody stems and branches)

In fact, anything biodegradable - even some pet waste, e.g. your rabbit or hamster bedding, but we don't recommend dog waste. Of course, if you add too much yard waste you will run out of room for your household compost scraps.

It will take about 6 to 8 weeks for each chamber from starting to fill to production of compost - so once both chambers are in operation you should be emptying one chamber every 3-4 weeks or so.

Construction

Exterior: powder-coated steel panels and galvanized steel legs (rust proof)

Clips and screws are stainless steel

Insulation: LDPE (will not leach)

Dual compartments:

The JK125 is divided into two compartments. One is being filled while the compost in the other matures. Once the compartment being filled can take no more, the mature compost is emptied from the other compartment, and the cycle begins again.

Installation

If you decide to hang it on a wall, you are responsible for determining if the wall is strong enough to handle the weight. Because of this risk, we recommend mounting it on the ground instead.

  • From K at 7/31/10 12:26 PM
    • What is the insulation material?
    • The insulation material for the Jora composter is high-density polyethylene which will not shrink or expand during hot or cold temperatures.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Polly at 3/7/11 2:42 PM
    • How is the compost removed? Does an inner 'drawer' lift out? Is the bin turned up to dump the compost out the opening into a bucket? Thanks!
    • Removing the finished compost from the Jora composters is easy, now that Jora has redesigned its composters to have a separate door for each of the side-by-side bins. To empty the compost, wheel your wheelbarrow under the composter, or set a bucket beneath it, and open the door of the chamber with finished compost. As you turn the drum, the compost will spill out into the barrow or bucket. The other chamber has the door closed so it won't empty.

The original Jora had a single door covering both compartments, which made it more difficult to remove the finished chamber. The new design is a great improvement.

    • I am a single woman. I rent. I eat home at lot, so I have quite a bit of food scraps. What size Jora would you recommend?
    • Hi Michele,
I think the Jora JK125 Composter - 4.5 Cubic Feet is the right model for you. If you were growing a small garden or tending a yard you might want the larger model, but otherwise the 4.5 cu ft model should be ample.

  • From Flav at 12/5/11 8:02 AM
    • I live in Miami, Florida, and I am interested in purchasing the JK125 composter. Since very rarely we have freezing temperature downhere, I was wondering if the insulation in the composter could be removed to allow for more useable room.
    • Thanks for your question. The insulation cannot be removed from the JK125. Even in warm temperatures, like you would experience year round in Miami, the insulation is necessary to create an environment where temperatures can reach 160F to allow fast and efficient breakdown of food scraps (including meat and fish!). While the insulation does take up some space, it increases the efficiency of the composter considerably.

  • From Liz at 1/6/12 2:54 PM
    • Will the composter work in a very shady area (in southern NM so quite warm much of hte time).
    • Yes, the Jora will work fine in your area. The shade will not affect the composting process. The Jora is well insulated and will be effective in any environment. If the outside temperature is high, then the composting process will be that much faster.

  • From Linda Vaughan at 5/29/12 11:22 AM
    • I am a single woman living alone, and will be starting a very small garden spring 2013 - 8 feet by 3 feet, for a couple of tomato plants, pepper plants, cucumber and some herbs. I do not have any yard work to take care of - just this small garden. Will the Jora 125 be large enough?

Also, I do not plan on ordering until Jan 2013 - will you have this item in stock at that time? Thanks a bunch for your time with these questions.
    • Yes. The JK125 is a good size composter for the requirements you describe.

We will continue to stock the Jora composters through 2013. We think they are the best available, and have two Jora's at our home too!
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Liz at 1/19/13 10:29 AM
    • The Jora composters look just about perfect. I read somewhere that the insulation will not leach into the compost. Does this mean that absolutely no chemicals will get into the compost? My garden is organic, so I want to make sure that my compost is too.

      Thanks.
    • The insulation in the Jora will not leach into the compost. Your compost will be as organic as the materials you put into it.
The JK125 is a good size for the average home use. If you have a larger garden you might want to look at the JK270.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Jackie at 4/30/13 9:28 AM
    • Can you use brown leaves in place of sawdust?
    • Yes. Brown leaves are an excellent carbon source. You can also use some finished compost, if available, as an activator. When we empty our composter, a small amount is left in the composter for this purpose.

Quality

so far so good

By Cory on 11/21/10

Received my composter several weeks ago, very good first impression. Quality materials. went together nice. Have dumped my old compost pile into one bin, now finished. Second bin filling now with fresh materials, but not enough dry brown matter this time of year. Looks pretty soggy in this bin, we'll see how it goes.
I like the two bin system, it's already been useful.

a beautiful composter

By Anton V. on 11/23/10

We are very pleased with our new Jora composter, it is beautiful, if one can say that about a composter. Today I'm buying one of your fancy compost pails, since we've moved to a new standard in composting!
To anyone getting one of these composters, put it on cement, pavers, or block up the feet, because the front feet work into the ground when it's soggy. The composter spins easy when level so be sure it's on a solid, level base.
We chose the Jora because of the two bin system. No waiting for batches to finish.

the cat's meow

By Ellie Thornbill on 11/26/10

I have been composting for years using a plastic bin open at the bottom, it was inexpensive but a lot better than our old pile in the corner of the yard. But I forced the lid when it was frozen last winter and cracked it badly. I wanted a new composter that will not crack in the freeze.
This new composter is the cat's meow! It's almost too nice to put compost in.

should have got the bigger model

By Leonard on 11/30/10

The composter is very well constructed and looks good, but now we generate more stuff to put into it than we used to. We compost more because we have this new composter. My wife is even getting food waste from our neighbor. Now I regret buying this model instead of the larger version. I'm hoping to sell this one to our neighbor, then we'll get the larger one.

cadillac composter

By Johnsons on 1/19/11

This Jora composter is the best of the lot in my opinion because the metal won't expand or distort in the sun like our old one did, and then the lid didn't fit.
The two bins is also the way to go.
My wife calls this one our cadillac composter.

Good design

By Kenneth on 4/5/11

All my reviews  (1)

Having done my research on tumbler composter, this one was the standout.
Fast shipment from Eartheasy. Good design and quality materials are evident. Assembly instructions were mediocre, but assembly is fairly straightforward if you're prepared to spend a fair amount of time on it.
As a brand new composter I was disappointed that the Jora is supplied with exactly zero information on composting. A strange oversight.

slight design flaw

By tbreds1 on 8/30/11

I purchased the 4.5 cubic size. While it says 2 people are needed to put together, it can be done alone. The instructions are easy to follow and it came well packed. The only problem I had was the self tighening screws for the metal sides are not staying tight. The screw head strip easily, so go slow when tightening, don't recommend using an electric screw driver.
