LifeStraw Family

How LifeStraw Family Works:

LifeStraw Family uses advanced hollow fiber technology. Water is forced through narrow fibers under high pressure. Clean water exits through tiny pores in the walls of the hollow fibers, but bacteria, viruses, protozoa and other contaminants are trapped inside the hollow fibers and are flushed out by backwashing. This is a highly efficient method of filtration.

  • The feed water bucket (2 liter capacity) is filled with water.
  • The 80-micron textile pre-filter (inside the feed water bucket) removes coarser particles and is easy to clean.
  • Water passes through the meter-long blue PVC hose and gravity creates sufficient pressure on the membrane cartridge in order to reach a high flow rate.
  • Ultra filtration takes place in the hollow fiber membrane cartridge - a pore size of 20 nanometers (0.02 microns) retains bacteria, viruses, parasites and fine dirt particles.
  • The blue tap is turned to release purified water.
  • Backwash the membrane by squeezing the red backwash bulb 3 times with both taps closed and then releasing the dirty water from the red tap. Water from the red tap should never be consumed.

  • From Fred at 9/17/13 11:10 AM
    • Is the shelf life of the family version 5yrs, like the regular lifestraw?
    • There is no shelf life for the LifeStraw Family. It can be stored indefinately. Also the shelf life has been revised for the LifeStraw Personal - there is no time limit on its storage.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Andy at 9/19/13 3:34 PM
    • Is there a method to monitor the life of the filter? In other words, how will I know when I am nearing the 18,000 liter mark?
    • There is no usage monitor. LifeStraw® Family has an auto-clog mechanism. If the product does not deliver water despite the backwashing and pre-filter cleaning, it means that the life of the product is over.
LifeStraw® Family will filter on average about 10 liters of water an hour and can filter more than 18,000 liters over the product's lifecycle. That is enough to provide a typical family of five up to three years worth of clean and safe water.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From John Stevens at 9/19/13 4:14 PM
    • The lifestraw does not filter virus's, the Family 1.0 says it does filter virus's. Is this done with Iodine or is it safe for paople sensitive to Iodine?
      Thanks
      John
    • Yes, the LifeStraw Family 1.0 does filter 99.99% of viruses. This is done with advanced filtering technology that does not use iodine.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Crittercares at 9/24/13 7:22 PM
    • Are parts and filters replaceable or available or do you have to buy a whole new unit at the end of the product filtration life?
    • There are no replaceable filters. At the end of the filtration life, you would have to buy a new one. The LifeStraw Family filters 18,000L of water, so it would be a very long time before the filter gets clogged. If 5 people use the Family everyday, it would take 3 years for the filter to expire.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes  No
  • From Rachelle at 11/4/13 7:17 AM
    • Can this be used for ocean water?
    • No. LifeStraw Family does not desalinate seawater.

  • From dena at 11/13/13 11:09 PM

I tried them all...this is thge best

By CaptainJack on 3/3/14

I own 4 life straws, one for my bug out bag, one always in the car, one in a back pack, the fourth is the straw and carry bottle. My next will be the family size for long term family emergency. I have 3 other types but these are the easiest to carry and use.

Great addition to our prepping supplies

By Mother prepper on 1/17/14

Going to get one of these for our longer term emergency water supply. I have the Life Straws in our bug-out bag, but this filter will be better for supply clean water in a larger quantity.

Can't beat the value

By George Marsh on 10/1/13

I know all the filters on the market, and dollar for gallon filtered (when comparing filters which remove viruses, aka purifiers), this is the very best value. I'm taking mine camping, and plan on keeping it at home primarily in case of boil water notices.

Family for my Family

By Sandra Bunch on 9/30/13

I cut the bag open, hung it in my kitchen, and poured water through the top. Followed the steps, and clean water dripped out the bottom. Simple and reliable! Thanks!

Great option

By Connor Fitzman on 9/26/13

I've got a few LifeStraws, and now the Family, so if I have to bug out, I can take my straws, and if I have to bug in, then I'll set up the Family in the garage and take water from the creek out back. I like how it's sealed in a nice tight medical-looking bag.

FINALLY

By G. Cooper on 9/25/13

Finally, finally, finally! After years, I finally had a chance to buy it. I got it two days later, hung it up, and tried it out with water from my pond out back. Works great! Thanks for bringing the Family to America.

Thanks for a lifesaver guys!

By Stephanie Anderson on 9/24/13

Thank you for finally offering this to us! I've been aware of it for years and am so happy it's finally offered here.

We set ours up in the kitchen (hung it off the corner of the door) and poured tap water through it to see how it worked. It took a few times of looking at the instructions on the bag, but once I figured it out, it works great. Soon we'll throw some really swampy water through it when my husband takes it hunting.

Seems good to me.

By Alfred McClasky on 9/22/13

I tried it when I got it and it didn't work right. Then I read the instructions, and yes it worked just fine, go figure. You definitely have to follow the steps.

I use a water bottle to collect the clean water out of the spout, and I just take a pot and fill it up in my rain barrel and pour the potentially dirty water in the top reservoir. Just gettin' ready for the big storm!

Good for camping, but a little bulky for hiking

By E. K. on 9/20/13

Great for car camping, but I think it's too bulky for long distance camping trips where we're backpacking in all our stuff. You can hang this from the side of your truck or a tree, and filter whatever water is around.

I like it.

By Sandra McMaster on 9/20/13

Good to have on hand for emergencies. Just take ditch water and it cleans it completely. Or even fill up the bath tub before a storm, or even the toilet water is a source of clean water now.

I recommend

By E. Rickston on 9/20/13

I've done a ton of research on filters that remove viruses, and for the cost, this one is the best. I love the fact that it's been used in developing countries for the past decade, in the millions. It looks a little complex to use, but follow the booklet and it's easy.

This is a must for preparedness

By Jon K. on 9/19/13

Been waiting for this product for years! I'm happy we can get it in the US finally. Hard to beat the capacity and the micron level it filters to, considering the price. I may take mine car camping, or hunting but it's a bit too big to take backpacking when my pack is full with all the other stuff. More like base camping is what it'll work best for. And of course I'll be keeping it at home in case of boil water advisories, or zombie apocalypse ;)

Excellent value

By Mike A on 9/19/13

Provides good peace of mind knowing that I can take water from the ditch outside, pour it in the top, and get clean water out the bottom. The floods in Colorado and their contaminated water is a good reminder to have a big filter like this.

Just be sure to follow the instruction booklet because there's a few things that have to be done in a certain order.
