A backup charger for your phone or tablet can can keep you linked in longer. If you need to power up something a little bigger than a phone, a power inverter might be a useful tool.

This one seems obvious ... once you've thought about it.

we've used the solar charger and it worked well but i've heard some aren't very good so you have to look at the details or reviews of each one. We actually used it mountain hiking when it was out of service, the battery drained, so we rigged it on top of my pack so it would get constant sunlight. Gave us a few bars in case of emergency!

You can get a power inverter that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter and will work with wall chargers--it's much cheaper than buying car chargers for all your devices. I have used mine in *many* power outages. It's only 140w but it ran a portable DVD player, the Roku, and internet modem while also charging 2 cell phones. Just had to turn on the car every now & then and let it idle for about 15 minutes. After Sandy, I bought an 800w power inverter and a marine battery to run it off of! I also got an emergency jump starter. Some of them are very basic (will only jump-start your car) but others (such as the Wagan Power Dome) have cigarette lighter & USB ports as well as 3-prong sockets.

PS--If you're looking for a completely off-grid option, you can get a "solar trickle charger" + battery + power inverter.

That BioLite is something I may need to invest in! I've recently wondered if people had harnessed the energy from fire to be either a backup charge or a generator of some sort. Question answered!

ive been waiting years for a usb plug that gets power from my bike wheels, like the old dynamo lights, but with a usb on the other end. you can almost get them, but you have to get expensive front wheels :(

id also like a way to charge my laptop off-grid. if I had both then id use them exclusively, then it wouldnt matter if there was a power outage!
