Every year in the UK there is a garden birdwatch which is useful for information about bird populations, which luckily in some cases are increasing, this also is a good way to get children and families involved with conservation and general nature awareness.

I love birds and am always wondering about the difference between common birds and parrots. They have very different talon structures and I always wonder how that came to be. They say dinosaurs evolved from birds, or visa versa - its still being debated. The prominent feature of parrots is their zygodactyl feet, with two forward-pointing toes and two rear-facing toes. I did find the mimic bird in Atlanta year-round and wondered WHY they (and parrots) mimic sounds. I tend to think that skill evolved from a sense of humor as they found extra leisure time and started playing practical jokes on other birds and animals!

I like the idea of having the count area be your back yards and gardens. This makes it easier to get more people involved, and is an opportunity for people to discover the natural wonders at their doorsteps.

I am so glad to hear that you do CBC. We also do yearly bird counts, and what we're asked to do is count the birds in our gardens/backyards. I live in central London so I don't get to see rare birds like wax wings (one bird I would love to see), but I once spotted a gold crest and I do have a local greater spotted woodpecker, some long tailed tits, great tits, blue tits and hedge sparrows which is wonderful to watch. Thank you so much for the brilliant article.
