Great points you make John. I particularly appreciate your comment about the best way being the laziest. This is one of the fundamental points of One Straw Revolution which has influenced me in gardening and yard care, as well as other pursuits. I have come to treasure the simple solutions, such as mulching to combat weeds and grasscycling to improve lawns.

I've been at this for years and it certainly helps the lawn grow and thirve, even in the dry spells of summer which, around here, can last from 3-5 months some years..Between my home and my church I look after nearly 3/4 of an acre of land and I've discovered that, sadly, electric mowers don't last under that kind of usage as they aren't designed for it. I do the best I can by using low emmission gas mowers. Rotary push mowers are off the menu due to a serious lower back injury which has disabled me from work and the church property sits on a 20 degree slope which can make things difficult for that sort of thing.. It's a choice of suitable tools for the job.
I don't worry about the "thatching" myth as I've switched to rye grass from bluegrass which does very poorly in this climate anyway and the much deeper rooting, clumping rye grass does a better job of holding the soil in place than the bluegrass can. The grass also does much better since we went to a minium 3" cut rather than a close shave kind of cut.
I've been a craftsman for so long that I know the best way is often the one that appears to be the laziest. Drop cutting or mulching is the best, in my opinion.

Organic gardening at it's finest. Why all those nitrogen rich clippings. It may not look as manicured but is sure a lot easier than dumping the bag all the time. LOL

Grasscycling , great term. I never understood why people bag the cut grass in the first place. It is just a lot of extra work anyway.

What a great post- green ideas that simultaneously encourage doing less work than not being green would are always the ideas that are guaranteed winners. Even people that don't care about being green are typically big fans of being lazy! Well done on your excellent blog!

I have been doing this for over 5 years now. I LOVE it. My grass looks fantastic. I typically ensure that I minimally mow my lawn right before it rains, since I only mow once a week. It probably would be better to mow more often, since I do get the hay look on my lawn.
