Not likely to make you sick, but the water will taste flat as it de-oxygenates without a lid. Why not just put a lid on?

I don't think storing water in the fridge is mentioned in this article. Where it says "do not store water next to food" is referring to dry foods stored in the pantry, which may be spoiled if they get wet, should the water container crack or leak.

Another tip: put a small baggie over the spigot of water barrel and use rubber band to keep tight. this keeps bugs out.

That was a good post. It is very important to learn to by hygienic in these ways too.
I would like to add another important point. It is not advisable to store water in a refrigerator after a certain period of time. The traditional way of storing water in mud-pots also is a very good idea.
