Slow Food

Every day can be enriched by doing something slow.

Slow Food began as a grassroots response to the expanding ‘fast food’ industry in Europe. In 1989, delegates from fifteen countries signed the manifesto that created the Slow Food movement. Slow Food has expanded globally to 100 countries and now has 83,000 members. Slow Food seeks to protect cuisines, regional dishes, ingredients, and small purveyors from the deluge of industrialization and to restore pleasures to our fast-paced and hectic lives.

Every day can be enriched by doing something slow - making pasta from scratch one night, seductively squeezing your own orange juice from the fresh fruit, lingering over a glass of wine and a slice of cheese - even deciding to eat lunch sitting down instead of standing up. As each of us changes our pace in life, slowing down, we will have an effect on the whole.

Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity

• 75% of European food product diversity has been lost since 1900
• 93% of American food product diversity has been lost in the same time period
• 33% of livestock varieties have disappeared or are near disappearing
• 30,000 vegetable varieties have become extinct in the last century, and one more is lost every six hours

The mission of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity is to organize and fund projects that defend our world’s heritage of agricultural biodiversity and gastronomic traditions.

"We envision a new agricultural system that respects local cultural identities, the earth’s resources, sustainable animal husbandry, and the health of individual consumers."

How to get involved

Local Slow Food goups are called 'convivia'. The best start is to contact your local convivia, or start your own. Check the Slow Food International site for info on countries not on this list.
